Update the media player to the newest version.
When media playersclip_image002.gif go through upgrades, new codecs are often added to the player along with new features.
These new codecs give the player an ability to play videosclip_image003.gif in additional formats.
Download and install a codec pack for your computer-based media player from a codec website, like Free-Codecs.

See Below
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_codec_pack.htm
The K-Lite Codec Pack, for instance, contains multiple codecs and works with multiple media players, which gives all of the media players that are installed on your system the capability to play any video file that uses those codecs.
Once you download a codec pack, go to the "Downloads" folder on your computerclip_image004.gif, right-click the codec pack and choose "Extract All" to extract the codecs and move the codecs into a folder on your "C:" drive.
The codecs integrate into your computer-based media players automatically.

Get a new player. If you have updated your player and installed all of the available codecs, and video still won't play in the player, the player may just not have the necessary components to play your video files.
Download and install a new player, such as Winamp or the VLC Player, to your system.

Personal Media Players
Find out which video formats your media player accepts.
This information should be provided in the user's guide that came with your player. iPod, for instance, accepts video only in the M4V, MP4 and MOV formats, according to the Apple website.
Convert the video file to a format supported by your personal media player in an online conversion system.
Some online systems that can make video conversions include Movavi Online Convert and YouConvertIt.
Remove the original video file from the media player using the player's softwareclip_image005.gif, such as iTunes for iPod devices.
Then, add the new video file to the software library and drag the new file to the deviceclip_image006.gif.
Once the video is in the correct format, the codecs in the media player should read the converted video file.

You can install Leawo Free MP4 Converter, when you install it, it will ask you to install a codec package, after you finish it. you can convert your video to MP4 format easily, or just watch your MKV video with Windows Media Player.

Every time i open the GOM player it would ask for "FIND codec"

GOM Player includes many codecs (XviD, DivX, FLV1, AC3, OGG, MP4, H263) Along with different media format such as AVI, MPG, MPEG and DAT, GOM Player also supports streaming Windows media format (WMV, ASF, ASX).

Possible Reason:

* Ensure that you have downloaded a genuine version and not a broken file, which is likely to miss some codecs, GOM is a FREE media player with popular audio & video codecs built-in. So you won't need to install separate codecs for most videos. For those videos that require a separate codec, GOM Player will find one.

* Without the appropriate codec, you'll be prohibited from playing AV files/the codec for which the file you are playing is missing (playback error), which prompts you to "Find Codec" screen. In the case you need other codecs, the 'Find Codec' popup will assist you in searching for the correct codec to play your file. If you didn't find any: first reason is likely to be the issue.

Fixes:

*Search Result will be shown on a new internet page. Once youve found it, simply download and install to watch the AV files.

I find the K-lite Codec pack covers just about every video format. The included older style windows media player classic is also far less problematic than windows media - download 'Full' version here;

Divx & Codec for Vista

-Unfortunately Windows media player is only loaded with a few codecs for video so you will need a codec pack found HERE

-just click Direct link and download and install the codec pack. Now you should be able to play 99.8 percent of video files in any format in WMP.

-As for myself, I swear by VLC media player as no additional codecs are required. its fast and easy to use. You can grab it HERE

I can not play avi files in my media player?

This will be a short solution. Or maybe not. Let's try.

Download the l8est audio/video codecs. I recommend the Windows XP Codecs: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/XP_Codec_Pack.htm

download and install VLC player. This player plays all formats of media ! I rarely use media player.

One thing you could also try is to download and install the latest direct X redist.

Kind Regards
Stef
