If its a wireless mouse, I would suggest you chk the batteries in the mouse. Also make sure the USB port that you have the receiver connected to, is working.

Wireless mouse not working

Now there can be several reasons why your mouse may have stopped working.
The mouse battery may have discharged. Or maybe you placed something by mistake between the mouse and the transceiver and therefore the connection is getting lost. Or there’s another wireless device in the vicinity (like a cordless phone) that’s on the same frequency range and thus interfering with the wireless signals of your mouse
If your wireless mouse is not working due to one of the above issues, here are three support articles from Microsoft that should help fix the problem
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321122
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811798/
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838398
However, if your confident that your mouse is not freezing due to bad USB ports and old drivers, try these simple steps.
Step 1: Take the battery out of your mouse, wait for a second and then re-insert the battery.
Step 2: If the cursor is still not moving, type “devmgmt.msc” in the Windows Run box to open the Device manager. Since the mouse is not working, you can press Win+R to access the Run box.
Expand the “Mice and other pointing devices” section, highlight your mouse listing and then select “Uninstall”. Then choose Action –> Scan for Hardware Changes and this should bring your mouse back to life.

Microsoft wireless notebook optical mouse quit working

You may have a bad mouse.

Try the mouse on another computer. Since it's a microsoft product it should install automatically just fine. It'll either work or it won't If it doesn't call Microsoft. The mouse has a warranty and MS will replace it. I was in a similar situation with a MS mouse and they sent me a new device. I did not have to send the bad device in and I got the replacement in a couple of days.

There could be several other factors influencing the behaviour of your optical mouse. Have you tried cleaning the lens underneath and also used a contrasting mouse mat on your table?
The range of this mouse is very limited (3ft) and you might have some interference from other devices around (like cordless phone, wireless devices and so on)

Check the following 2 sites for more troubleshooting ideas. Also the microsoft site referenced below provides some software you can download to diagnose better.

At the back of the mouse, there will be small flushed 'reset' button. Press that. It resets and reconfigures the connection. If it still doesn't work, the mouse has gone bad.

I'm having pretty much the same problem with my Microsoft Wireless 4000 mouse and my hp-compaq 8510p laptop. If I shut my machine down, or restart, my mouse no longer works. I have to uninstall/reinstall the Intellipoint software. The synaptics touch pad continues to work, but the mouse fails.
