Question about HP LaserJet 3200se Printer

LaserJet 3200 scanner thinks no docs loaded

My poor old LJ 3200, I am doing quite a bit of scanning and I think it's overloading the beast. I'm able to do about an hour of scanning of multi-page documents, and then it will decide it's tired of that, and when I tell it to scan (via the ''Scan Control Viewer'' application on the PC) it pulls the first page into the scanner ... and just sends it straight on through. Never scans it. And then the PC software says ''Document Feeder Error'' and ''scanner not loaded''.

I'm guessing I have to replace something, but what?

Thanks!
Chris

Nope, the communications patch didn't do anything. I downloaded it, ran it, it finished pretty much immediately, I tried the scan again, no difference.

But I'm not surprised, I can't imagine that this is an issue of communication between the 3200 & the PC.

When the 3200 does scan, here's what happens. I load my document, the PC tells the 3200 to scan, the 3200 starts sucking the paper into the scanner and when the top edge of the paper hits the scan bar, suddenly the motion of the paper becomes quite slow & jerky as the page is scanned.

What I see instead starts out the same - I load my document, the PC tells the 3200 to scan, the 3200 starts sucking the paper into the scanner, but when the top edge of the paper hits the scan bar, it just keeps going. Never slows down. The 3200 displays "LOAD PAGES FACEDOWN IN DOCUMENT FEEDER" and the PC gives its error.

I'm not sure how the 3200 detects that a page has successfully entered the scanner - whether it's an optical sensor or a simple physical switch, but it seems exceedingly likely that what I'm seeing is that that detector isn't working. The 3200 runs its motor to pull the page into the scanner, but its sensor never says "yup, there's a page here" so it runs the motor for a few seconds and then gives up.

My 3200 does have pretty old firmware (20010525) but it's connected via USB and I don't think I have the special cable it requires to hook it up to the parallel port - and from what I've read online, (1) I can only update over parallel, not USB, (2) lots of these old printers die if you try to update their firmware, and (3) since I did a lot of scanning and it worked fine, that tells me my firmware is OK, it's some piece of hardware that broke since I started scanning.

I have a copy of the 3200 Service Manual, and a full set of tools, so I'm ready to take this puppy apart and replace whatever needs replaced ... I'm just not sure what that is.

    Thanks,
    Chris

Who are these people, and what makes them think they are experts?

No, this is not a solution by any stretch of anyone's imagination.

  • cscooper Feb 04, 2009

We're getting closer, but I don't know how to "check the feed sensor". What does it look like? How will I know if it's OK?

  • cscooper Feb 04, 2009

The proposed solution was "The sensor which detects the paper is faulty or stuck up." OK, which sensor? What does it look like? In the Service Manual, what replacement part do I need to order?

  • cscooper Feb 05, 2009

I had a suggestion to unplug it, wait 30 minutes, then plug it back in and hold down the 6 and # keys. This did absolutely nothing.

Buschchris1 - hopefully I can hang on to you, you're the first "expert" who had any idea what was actually going on.

Yes, the LJ 3200se is an all-in-one.
No, it's so old it's way past any warranty period.
The link you sent to the HP site doesn't help a lot, the printer is so old they don;t have a lot of web pages talking about it.
The LJ 3200 doesn't complain about anything being broken, it just says I forgot to put anything in the document feed.

I thought about overheating, but now it's been sitting quiet all day, and still won't scan.

I'm thinking paper dust getting in somewhere and clogging something is the most likely answer, but I'm not sure what or where or if I can just clean it without replacing any parts.

If I open up the scan cover, and look down the paper path, there's a small black movable prong near the top. That can't be the problem, it's not in the right place to indicate that paper has entered the scanner, only that paper has been placed into the feed.

Next come the scan separator pads, I just replaced those.

Next are a couple rollers, white and black next to each other.

Just below the rollers is another black plastic prong that could be a sensor. Actually, I'm willing to bet he's the bad boy. It's just below rollers, so when I put paper in the scanner feed, the rollers would keep the paper above this prong, and only when the rollers start rolling would the paper hit this prong.

Then comes a white spring-loaded bar that runs the entire width. I'm guessing it just holds the page up against the scanner.

Below the bar is a white roller, on the two sides of that are two bent metal things that could be connected to switches/sensors.

None of the movable things that stick into the paper path _look_ broken.

Thanks BuschChris, you came the closest to having any idea what was going on. In the end, I'll just start replacing parts and see when it starts working. And I won't bother with FixYa.com the next time I have a problem.

The actual motor that is used to pull the scanning lamp in this unit may have burned out due to the workload. i would pull it for a voltage test. i think this motor may be dead.

if not completely burned out then, it could be possibly on its way.

I'll give it a shot. I work on alot of HP and Dells and lexmarks ayt my job so maybe a few tips will help. here goes.

The paper sensor is usually a plastic piece that sticks down some where along the paper path and it usually uses gravity or a weak spring to hold it down and the paper hits it, pushing it up and that tells the scanner/printer that there is paper there and thus, it pulls it through.

Some ways this can have issues is if you use alot of paper, the paper dust that acumalates over time makes stiff and may cause it to stick in the up position. Some times it breaks off and nothing works.

Now this is an HPLJ3200 right? One of those all in one scanner/printer/fax?

If its an HP, this link will take you to the trouble shooting, maybe it will help.

When you start having these issues, is there any messages or blinking lights that might indicate an error?

Let me know what you have done or tried, what the exact model and brand. Get back to me and I will go from there.

It could be a possibility, and this is just a guess, but if your doing alot of scans, it may be getting very hot and it needs to cool down. if this is the model i think it is, Its not really meant for home use, not constant scanning like in a business environment.

Anyways, let me know and we can keep at it.

Also, How old is it? If its still under warranty, You can get online help pr call in and they will help you. sometimes its something simple that is a known issue by the manufacturer.

Well, im sorry to hear you didnt get a good answer here. If you think its just paper dust, try getting compressed air and blasting it out. Dont spend too much money on it, you can get new ones for cheap now that the Economy is going down the pooper.

With printers and scanners, I find that ther are alot of smal fragile plastic pieces inside and once in a while one will break in a way wher its not noticable, but causes issues and is hard to determin.

It could just be poped out spring or a warn art and thers no way for any one of us to pinpoint it without being there.

Well, the website offewrs free advice before paying for it and alot of us do both. I do it if im paid or not so if you have other problems or issues, feel free to post on the free postings, free advicce couldnt hurt.

    Good luck.

Unplug all the cables from the computer, wall, and power outlet. Wait about half an hour and then plug it all back in and turn it on. Once it is turned on hold the 6 and # key if you do not have a 6 or # key hold the start and stop button at the same time for 10 seconds. Once done run any self test options you have for your printer and try scanning again. Please post the results.

The sensor which detects the paper is faulty or stuck up.just open the feeder assembly and check the sensor.most probably it must be stuck up.clean it and reposition it so that it can detect the paper feeding in.its a very very common problem

If it is a c-3200 code it means that you have a exposure lamp problem.Defective scanner, defective scanner PCB,lamp or inverter board, incorrect shading, poor contact of the connector terminals on lamp assembly. Look for a bad connection And look at lamp. Look for blue rings or burnt ends. Now don't look at that light while its on.

Hello Steve !
The only way scanning Legal documents on this HP LJ 3030 willbe using the ADF ( Automatic Document Feeder) since the size of the flatbed its only for letter.

So, after placing the document on the automatic document feeder theres a few setting you will need to change on the printer.

Number 1 : Go to Main Menu on the printer and look for System Setup, under system set up look for Paper setup, hit ok and now look for "Def. Paper Size" and set it to "Legal"

Number 2 : you should have a button on the printer control panel (Physical printer) that says " Reduce / Enlarge" , hit it and make sure the one selected is "original=100%"

Now just hit "Start Copy" and it print LEGAL ! it worked for me

Hope this help !

Does HP LJ 3055 printer scan over the wireless network?

Scan over wireless network is not supported with this printer. You can try set it up and get scanner to work with usb and then change port from usb to HP standard TCP/IP for the device, but I don't think it will work.
