Question about Cisco Catalyst 2950 24x10/100 Mbps Networking Switch

Cisoc 2950 with odd Problem

I have Cisco 2950 24 Port Switch I can access via console I can change configurations. I can reset the Switch everything appears normal and works normal that way. But I connect a ethernet cable (that has been conifrmed to work) to a port on the switch and the other to a functioning nic the link leds go all green etc etc and they appear to go in to 100m mode no problems there are even blips of traffic etc. But NO ethernet traffic goes accross as far as I can tell I cannot connect to any other devices on the network but everything appears. Now lets cut out the basic responses I have checked my switch config and reset to a very basic config on the switch, I have set up and work on many networks but this is the oddest problem I hve ever come accross wth a cisco switch. I have even tried loading the newest IOS on it. Why would it appear to be processing ethernet traffic....

I recently had a client switch do this to me. The only way to get it working was to manually put the NIC on my laptop to 10 Mb and Half duplex. After calling Cisco and opening a TAC case, it was deemed faulty hardware.

If you have SmartNet (anyone buying Cisco should always buy SmartNet) on the switch, call TAC and open a case. It's probably faulty hardware.

Good Luck!

I forgot a password and i cant access a catalyst 2960 24-port 10/10

You can only reset password this way:
1.
Attach a terminal or PC with terminal emulation (for example, Hyper Terminal) to the console port of the switch.
Use the following terminal settings:
  • Bits per second (baud): 9600
  • Data bits: 8
  • Parity: None
  • Stop bits: 1
  • Flow Control: Xon/Xoff
2.Unplug the power cable.
3. Hold down the mode button located on the left side of the front panel, while you reconnect the power cable to the switch
4. Release the Mode button when the SYST LED blinks amber and then turns solid green. When you release the Mode button, the SYST LED blinks green.
5. switch: flash_init
6. switch: load_helper
7. switch: dir flash:
8. switch: rename flash:config.text flash:config.old
Rename config.text to config.old. In that file the password is stored.
9. switch: boot
10. Enter "n" at the prompt to abort the initial configuration dialog
11. Type en to enable
12. Switch#rename flash:config.old flash:config.text
13. Switch#copy flash:config.text system:running-config
14. Overwrite the current passwords:
conf term
enable secret <new pass>
enable password <new pass>
line vty 0 15
password <new pass>
login
line con 0
password <new pass>

15. write memory
16. copy run start

Access denied

yes, you should be able to connect to the console port using a roll-over cable RJ45-DB9, connect using hyper terminal or similar using the com port settings 9600,8,N,1
You can then configure the switch from the CLI...

Have you set the 'Login' command on the VTY lines in the switch setup and an IP address on the management VLAN to connect to.
You also HAVE to have a password enabled on the vty lines in order to connect via telnet.

hope this helps.

Cisco catalyst 3500xl (24 port) bad console

It is possible that your console port is configured for a different baud rate. Try to change your baud rate on your hyper terminal going from 115200 down to 2400. If it doesn't work you might have a problem with 232 driver chip that is located on the board next to your console port. You will not be able to find a schematics for this switch, it is not available for the public.
You can send this switch to me. I will glad to fix it for you.

Good luck.

Switch IP

Hi, the ports themselves don't have an IP address. The switch has one IP address for online configuration. this model does switching only and doesn't use DHCP to issue addresses
