cal error is not a big deal it is just a programming adjustment, it is not the cause of the cd fault. GM radios have a history of cd drive failures. we fix them alot. if you buy another used radio then you will need to reprogram it to work with your truck. or getting it fixed will not need to get programmed.
I have an '03 Explorer with the 6 disc changer. It does the same thing. Many times, you can set the radio to "FM1" and hold down buttons 3 and 6 on the radio. This will put the unit into self diagnostic mode. After it runs the diag., turn off the ignition and remove the key for at least 30 seconds. Sometimes it takes a couple times but it always works on mine.
if you are handy at fixing things unhook the cd player, unbolt it, carefully remove screws holding the unit and remove the actual cd player, now remove many tiny screws to open the unit out of the case, look for various wheels and try to turn them, do not force any of them. usually the wheel allowing the motion to move to various tracks on cd gets locked. if you can move it, most likely you solved your problem. put evrything back in the same order.
I had this same problem on my 2000 Jeep GC Limited. Today I decided to open it up after looking all over the net and found no help, but spend $500.00 on a new unit. I removed the unit and used canned air inside all the areas I could. I hooked it back up and was finally able to make the CD cleaner disc work. Once that was done I loaded it with 10 cd's and it is working again. I'm so happy! I saved my hubby 500 big ones.
