Okay im goin down the same road as u right now apprently we both got error 74 at the exact same time lol.

before you read this lemme apologize for it being kind of long, i hate reading long things but there really is nothing else i can do there is a ton of **** to learn right now about xbox lol.

ive been doing some research error 74 is apparently most likely a heating issue, although it could be an av cable so check that first? but i dont think that it will be. Basically people think its an AV cord issue because the GPU(graphics chip) is overheating due to a bad X clamp. But anyway, heres whats up
1. X clamp prolly went bad, it sits underneath the motherboard and keeps the heatsink in place, theres two of them
2.Microsoft probably wont help you with this, you can try calling though it cant hurt. I still will call but im planning to fix this myself.
3. Error 74 is a general code, heres what you do to narrow it down

Hold the Sync button on the xbox, while holding press the eject button, a set of lights should appear, release the eject button and press again, a new set should appear ( these are all on the red ring of death that you probably want to kill by now), do this two more times, 4 sections on = 0, 1=1, two is a 2, three is a 3. there is no four. I got code 1022 which is the bad x clamp and such. go to this website to determine what you have. I dont know if this link will work you might have to type it in sorry,
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=484726

so now that you figured it out check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vy2pVygQPXM
thats gonna tell you how to take it apart. i dont know how to fix it enough to tell you right now but i will be back to this site soon. i dont think the towel method or cooking method is the right route to go. the towel method and cooking method basically involve intentional overheating to try to get some of the soldier(i dont know how to spell that, its like soder, that stuff) to melt.
What im about to do and ill let you know how it works is to take it apart and take the X clamp off, kinda poke around in there, add some Thermal Goo( to the top of the chip, i dunno what else, and buy one of those Xbox fan sets from gamespot.

again sorry for the length my email is ptone16@gmail.com if you have any more questions, and ill post what ive been doing to my xbox on this site again prolly tonight or tomorrow and let you know how it worked.

okay so after redoing the thermal compound and the short steps in this videohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0katvvV3r... i swear to all in the name that is holy that my xbox no longer has the red rings of death, i still have to reassemble tho, easy compared to what i just went through.
i might put on washers and nuts instead of the x clamp because i got the green ring without one of the x clamps so i will have to see if putting it back on messes it up again, there are videos out there to show how to use just washers and bolts instead of the x clamps its not that bad. but anyway yeah i guess im good to go, so if anyone has the same problem i had just follow my guide and you should be fixed in no time

How do i fix an error 74 on an xbox360

The E74/E6x/E4x/E8x are famous error codes that have plagued many Xbox 360 gamers. This error codes will be displayed on your screen, each indicating different problem with your Xbox 360. It's usually defined by the single red light or 1 Red Light Error lit up at lower right quadrant on the Red Ring of Light on your Xbox 360 console.
E74: There is high chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip near the AV cable connection) it can also be caused by a faulty AV cable so check that first. In some cases it is a problem with the GPU and may be repairable by using the Xbox 360 Repair Guide. Xbox 360 E74 error has reported to increasing a lot for the newer Xbox 360 version.
Hope this was helpful?

My xbox 360 comes up with an error 74 code how can

E74: AV cable error... There is a problem with the AV cable, try using a different AV cable. If the cable is known to be working then there is a 90% chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip connected directly to the AV cable) in rare cases it is the GPU.
If your still under warrenty send it to microsoft, if not you could try the towel trick (i dont recommend) or bring it to someone that can repair it for you (try cr@igs list)..

Xbox 360 e74 error

Having the e-74 code is when the video chip on the 360 over heats and becomes un soldered your best bet is to turn the 360 on with a towel over it and wait for 3 red lights the call microsoft and tell them the 3 lights issue dont mention the 1 light or it will cost you dearly around 150$

You should still be under warranty, follow the above url, and get a repair request in, it should be no charge.
