Question about Reddy Heater RLP100 Portable Forced Air Propane Heater with Variable Heat Ouput

HVAC heater fan blowing backwards. 480 volt, 3-phase fan motor. Already tried reversing leads, but it always sucks the hot air out the back, instead of blowing it out the front.

Sounds like a bad or stuck reversing valve. Typically r.vs. are energized in cooling, verify 24 volts to valve, if yes , bad valve

I just bought a double head notcher with 2-10hp 3 phase motors they were wired 480 volt I only have 230 volt 3 phase from a converter. I put 2 starters to match voltage and motor size.what's the prob.


talk with an electrician but I think that if you have 3 phase motors on 480 volts you will need an inverter that will handle 480 volts
as it stands now you only have 230 volts for 3 phase and that means that there is insufficient power to run the motors
however in cases such as this , a long talk with an electrician could save lots of money

Its always possible for a component like a relay to damage a motor. I normally see them run backwards due to a weak capacitor. A single phase motor is not supposed to run backwards but I've seen it many times. Ive seen a new motor run backwards, new capacitor, new air handler. To answer your question, its possible but likely it was the motor or relay.

I need to wire up a baldor 3 phase motor 208-230/480 15hp and dont have the wiring diagram to know what wire is what or where to hook it to?


Hi Casey, I'm an electrician and can help you with this problem.

First, a disclaimer. Without the catalog number of the motor you have, or a wiring diagram for it, no one can tell you how to wire this motor with any certainty. With that said...

Nearly all single speed 3 phase motors have 9 leads (numbered 1 thru 9) and can be wired for either "high" or "low" voltage. Most of the time, high is 480 volts and low is 208/240 volts. Given that you posted the amperage as "41-38 / 19", I am 99% confident that 41 amps is at 208 volts, 38 amps is at 240 volts and 19 amps is 480 volts. Further below is the way to wire unless the motor manufacturer or name plate indicates differently. You will need to determine the voltage of the appliance this is going to be installed into. You should be able to find this on a name plate of the appliance - but it may provide a dual voltage spec here, too. If this is the case, you will need to *carefully* measure the voltage with a meter, or find out the voltage of the electric panel that feeds the appliance.

Once you have learned the incoming voltage, you will connect the motor as such when L1, L2 and L3 are the line voltage supply wires and wires 1 thru 9 match the numbers on the nine wires from the motor.

208/240 or "Low" volts:
Motor leads 4, 5 & 6 connected together and wirenut.
Motor leads 1 & 7 to L1 and wirenut.;
Motor leads 2 & 8 to L2 and and wirenut and lastly,
Motor leads 3 & 9 to L3 and wirenut.

480 or "High" volts:
Motor lead 1 to L1 and wirenut,
Motor lead 2 to L2 and wirenut,
Motor lead 3 to L3 and wirenut,
Motor leads 4 to 7 and wirenut,
Motor leads 5 to 8 and wirenut and lastly,
Motor leads 6 to 9 and wirenut.

The motor should be operated briefly or "jogged" to determine the direction the motor turns. If the motor rotation needs to be changed, simply swap any two "L" wires (swap L1 and L2, or L1 and L3, or L2 and L3). Test once more to verify rotation and when correct close the wiring compartment and complete the installation. Swapping the L wires will likely be much quicker and easier to do at the magnetic contactor instead of the the motor's wiring compartment. Either location is acceptable.

You should try to obtain the name plate data for this motor - if at all possible to to make sure of the voltage and wiring method. I hope this helps & good luck!

Fi have a older furnace that operates like this. main burners will come on then the blower turns on and furnace continues to heat untill it shuts down on the high limit. there is no blockage on the cold...


Maybe there is a blockage in the air conditioning coil above the furnace? This happens when people have pets, or dont use filters. Single phase 120-240 volt motors won't run backwards if you reverse the wiring that's dc or three phase, you have to check the rotation of the wheel, the right rotation is usually marked on the blower case. Some motors will allow you to change the rotation but you have to check the wiring diagram. Also use new capacitors when they go bad the motor can run backward. God luck

You'd need to supply a "Buck-Boost" transformer to do this properly. Technically, the 265 VAC is one hot leg and neutral of a 480 VAC 3 Phase Y system that measures 277 VAC. The 265 number comes from this:

265 is the standard nameplate voltage for a 277 volt motor or AC unit.

230 is standard name plate for 240.
200 is standard name plate for 208
460 is standard name plate for 480.
110 is standard name plate for 120.

Most electricians call the hot leg / neutral circuit "277V AC".

Some popular "Buck-Boost" transformers will convert 208 to 240 and 240 to 208 volt systems, and 240 to 277 and 277 to 240 volt systems - among many other variations. These are auto-transformers as the primary secondary windings share a connection. KVA ratings differ significantly from name plate because of this fact. You should contact a qualified electrician to not only size, but wire the transformer for you. Failure to install a Buck-Boost transformer - and running this unit on 240V AC mains will cause premature failure of motors - fans and compressor due to overheating. This can also result in a fire hazard.

Hello, I had to replace my outside condenser motor with a universal motor and need to know if it should turn clockwise or counter clockwise, it's a 3 ton and the motor hangs with blades down....


Heres what you need to look for when you turn the motor on it it sucks air downward you have it going backwards. Reverse the two leads that are connected by plastic coated leads most of the wires are purple and yellow. The fan should blow upwards it probably going to be clockwise but now you know what to look for. If this helps please rate me and do a testimonial.

If it has 9 leads and is a 240/480 volt motor the 1and 7 go to line 1. the 2 and 8 leads go to line 2 and the 3 and 9 leads go to line 3. the 4 5 and 6 leads are hooked together with a wire nut. To reverse rotation simply reverse any 2 of the line leads.. Prairie Dog........

Wiring a 230V 3 phase heat pump


yes, this is quite important when it comes time to turn the motor. in 3 phase, motor rotation direction is critical importance. however, it is a simple matter of trial and error if only a fan is involved...not sure of consequences if freon pump is turned backwards...may want to remove pump wiring temporarily...so try "bumping" the fan only...your method for this "fan only" is yours to figure out. try to set to "fan only" somehow then apply power. if fan turns backwards, the take any 2 black wires and reverse connections. fan should now turn in proper direction.
