Question about Maytag MMV4205 Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Nothing... A teenager visiting the house used the cook mode for a timer, running the unit without anything in it. I caught it after 8 min. It was still running. After I turned it off....nothing. No display on the keypad or anything. I've replaced the fuse behind the vent on top of the unit and checked the outlet and breakers, and would think if it were the magnetron that was out, there would still be a display...???

I baked sweet potatoes for what I thought was the recommended amount of time. It must have been too long, because suddenly the microwave shut down. I replaced the fuse, checked the breaker, everything--nothing. The display and the power are both dead. I get absolutely nothing.

The magnetron overheated, causing the magnetron thermostat to open, which kills all power.

When it cooled, it should have closed the circuit and allowed power through again.

If not, then the thermostat will need to be replaced.

Hopefully the magnetron is okay! Running them empty is a good way to ruin them...

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

If you don't find yours, or if you want to look at it without disassembling the oven, you can download it here.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

Accessing some components for testing and possible replacement will require you to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

How do I know wattage for 1974 recipes and convert cooking time to todays microwave (1200)

A 1974 Microwave Oven is probably not putting out more than 600 watts. You need to do a power test to determine it's actual power output. Place a 2 cup glass measuring cup with exactly 500 mL of cold water. Record the starting temperature of the water. Run the microwave on 100% power for 18 seconds, using a watch or timer, not the timer on the unit. Take the water out and stir it to make sure that there are no hot or cold spots in the measuring cup. Record the new temperature. Example: 78.4-64.1= 14.3.
Multiply 14.3 X 38.75= 554.125. The power output is 554 watts IEC. If the recipe is set for a 1200 watt unit, and your is almost 600 watts, obviously, you would double the cook time. Since this is rough, you need to experiment a bit. If the cook time is 10 minutes, check your product at 8 minutes. Be sure to push the stop button before you open the door when it is in cook mode. This will save wear and tear on door switches and leave the remaining cook time on the timer. Let me know how this works out for you..

You probably fried the magnetron(it actually makes the microwaves that do the cooking). I bet you will find the magnet is broken(from excessive heat). There should be a diagnostic guide sheet somewhere inside the housing(due to running production changes, this is a guide for the pros to test the power supply, magnetron, etc with an ohmmeter to determine which is defective.

The timer counts down but the microwave doesnt turn on.

I have a FNCB115GC Microwave problem. The microwave has a icon on the left hand side of the panel that looks like a opened book on a stand with lines on top. This is best that I can descibe it. The microwave turntable does not move or the microwave does to come on but the light comes on and the timer will count down. I have cleared the microwave and unplugged it with no results. Please help. Thanks in advance.

Never run the microwave without a load (something to heat)!!! That kills the microwave generating parts.

Sounds like a 'thermal' protect switch is activating after running. Make sure that (if the unit is mounted in a cabinet) that there is sufficient space around the unit for proper air flow and that nothing is blocking the vents. Try setting it on a counter top and heat something. If it works properly and doesn't shut off, the venting space is the problem. You may have to have the cabinet that it sits in redesigned for more clearance.

Microwave turns on, but no heat or turntable movement

The problem is that the magnatron is not getting power. Chance is that if could be a bolwn fuse inside the unit. If the fuse don't fix it then that leaves the charging diode, capacitor or the magnatron, or high voltage xformer of which without technical epertize I would not recomend attempting to replace. good luck

Probably magnatron is bad. Best test is to substitute a known good one. There are others but you are in the 4000 volt area of the unit.
