Two things to look at---------the lamp to see if shattered inside AND with it removed look where it faces at the color wheel--see attached photo.
Look to see if any segments are broken, missing etc. Many of the wheels fail in this way and some will have a high pitched or even fan like sound before they fail.
Some when really bad will make a grinding noise also. The set monitors the speed of the wheel and if it slows or stops the set will almost instantly turn the lamp off(if possible watch from area where lamp is to see if at turn on to see if it for a moment lights or not.
Try connecting the TV directly to a different wall outlet and check. If the issue persists, try power resetting the TV. Turn Off the TV and remove the power plug from the wall outlet for 1 minute and reconnect it and check the operation. If the issue persists, then the TV requires service
Check the Lamp Fan if it is defective Lamp will try to light but will shut off, And the Ballast board is what turns Lamp on, For Part number o to Encompass parts distrubtion and type in your model they should list the ballast board and PN Then go to Ebay Look under Electronics type in PN, I got mine for $65.00
Lamp for $85.00
It sounds like your lamp is getting close to the end of its lifespan. The lamp is what gives your screen its brightness. With time they start losing this brightness. If you were to wait to replace it till it goes out completely you would have a black screen. You can purchase a quality lamp at discount-merchant.com
Yes replace the blub with a sony original lamp. The lamps sold as replacements such as LTI these lamps are not good for use as they don't fully meet the specs for sony televisions. Look at the lamp manufacture on the bulb itself if you see LTI as the manufacture then replace the lamp with a Phillips brand lamp.
No it your lamp has failed this time. Replace it and you should be enjoying ur television again.
The pop sound was the lamp shattering in its housing, does'nt get into the television tho. You can save money by just buying the bulb and installing it into your original lamp housing.
