If you are talking about the cooling jel that goes between the processor and the heat sink, yes, and the more the better. It might just be that the cooling system is plugged with dust ect. These things are like mini vacume cleaners, and seem to store all they **** up in the cooling fins. Blow the cooling system out with some canned air.

Is the fan and vents free of dust? Is the laptop getting sufficent air flow? It sounds like power issues maybe multiple issues. Does it overheat? Difficult to say for sure. If your remove the battery?

No display. external monitor display for a while then gone

This is an indication of a integrated video card matter or an over heating issue lets hope it is that, it will need to possibly be replaced the card or dusted really good to unplug the cooling port.
Also last ditch check over heating you will have to have it cleaned out the vent ports may look cleaned outside but inside I bet there plugged with dust and debris. Check that out before having to get a new board for your laptop. If you can just gently kind of push the board down from where the mouse pad is located kind of gently bend it and the screen shorts a bit then it is a video card for sure the chip got hot and weakened the solder points. This is common with laptops when they overheat video gets choppy or freezes or laptop shuts completely down. John

Laptop randomly overheats/shuts down.

Just let it charge fully , take out charger and then use it as normal , when you leave a charger plugged in it drains the life from the battery ????Best of luck hope it works it did for a few ppl on here

I heard a "snap" noise and my laptop shut down

Hello,

Most of the time when you hear that kind of noise and it was plugged into the AC adapter, a power surge hit your pc and it will need a new mainboard to power back on.

Sorry for the bad news.

I have an acer 5520 laptop,it has started shutting of without any warning even though plugged in and fully charged

Causes:

1. Overheat

Most cases this is caused by a over heat where the system fan gets blocked or there is not enought air flow, this can damage the system cpu.

Other known causes

AC/ adapter needs to be replaced some case were found that the ac adapter would be the cause as well it would be something to have checked out.

Now if the system shuts off without the ac adapter and its running on the battery as well you might want to look at the overheat issue.

thanks for using fixya please do be considerate and post you ratings and feedback for your answer today.

This site has a some info on that.
I must say that all laptops get hot but the shutting off is worrisome. Try placing it on a raised surface that does not block the air vents and have a fan or something to circulate some cool air around it.

Try a different power outlet? Possible shut down of DC supply due to short circuit can be heard if listen close at back of TV on plug in or power up with remote for a quick squeel then ticking sound or tick tick tick and nothing.

My Computer wont Start up

I got a new fan for my PC, but it was under warranty. Your PC does not know that the fan does not work until it overheats. So, you have some other problem. Try to start it without a battery, just plugged in, if it is a laptop. All anyone else will tell you is that if you get it on, you should reflash the bios. That always is what they tell you. I guess it can't hurt, but if it shuts off immediately, maybe you think you have full power but don't? That's what it is acting like, right? No power.
