The erase head is not erasing. This could be from a bad electrical circuit or more likely it may just need cleaning. The erase head is the leftmost head and likely has only 2 wires connected to it. if it's not dirty, try to watch that the tape is making good contact with it as the tape passes over the head.

I have a Philips pocket memo 381 that lets out a loud bleep when trying to record on it. Batteries have been changed twice this makes no difference.

This is the end-of-tape signal. Try turning the cassette over. If this does'nt work then there is no tape drive due to the belt coming loose or breaking.

Red record button will not depress to start recording

Check that you have not knocked the record tab out of the tape you are using.  Try a new tape.

Taped sounds are deteriorating and disappearing.

If the tapes you are using are indeed brand new, then I would assume that the heads on the tape recorder are either very dirty or damaged. Try using a q-tip dipped in alcohol to clean the heads of the recorder. Clean the rollers too and pins that guide the tape. If that doesn't work it may be a component problem. And may be cheaper to replace than repair.

Transfer recording from tape recorder to computer

Use a cable running from the headphone jack on the recorder into your PC microphone jack. Then you can capture the audio using Windows MovieMaker software that comes with Windows XP. I have done this and it worked perfectly.

There is no voice when I replayed the camcorders

What happens to the audio when you play the tape in another machine? Does it still drop out? Check the tape visually when it has no sound and see if the edge of the tape is creased. Also is the picture OK when the sound goes off. Does it jump around ans lose sync. If it does it means that the tape is mistracking. It's possible for the tape guides to go out of alignment but usually this is accompanied by picture breakup too. If you've never done it before don't attempt to realign the guides youself, you can really put it out of alighnment and it will damage the tape. Is the microphone built in or removeable? if it's the latter then check the connections and make sure nothing's broken. If there's a switch to go from internal mic to external mic see if it's switched to the proper position, it could be half way between internal and external. I'm opting for a tape problem, Either way a trip to a repair shop may be the best bet. BMW
