Question about Texas Instruments TI-89 Calculator

The menus in home's f1 for example "open" is dotted and unreadable, they look like chopped up words

Does anyone have a solution for this?

Part of the display control has failed disabling sections of the display.
You might check with TI to see if they have a fair repair price, this is not likely to be one you can solve.

The only possibility would be to disassemble the case to gain access to the display.
If TI doesn't repair them at a fair cost, you might try to remove the LCD display from its mounting or, if it seems practical, to stress the display from the side.
The contacting of an LCD is done with a silicone rubber strip with embedded fine wires that carry the control signals from the printed circuit board to lightly plated corresponding contacts on the glass of the LCD.
The positioning of this strip is extremely critical and is dependent on precise pressure on the silicone strip.
Yours may have 'slipped' but the error could be cause by poor positioning at the factory that has just now revealed itself.
The difference between contact and no contact at the junction of the strip and plated glass area could be a couple thousandths of an inch.
You may make it worse instead of better but if it is unreadable anyhow, it really doesn't matter.

The fact that the icons show on first screen is not a bug. It is a configuration setting.

**Just in case some keys answer to a keypress.**

Press the diamond key and the HOME key to get to the HOME screen. In Home screen press the MODE key. Use the Function keys (F1,F2,F3) to move to the last page of the configuration where you find the option Apps Desktop and toggle it to OFF. Press ENTER to save.

If that does not work (because the arrow keys) do not answer, try to RESET the calculator: Press [2nd][MEM] to open memory management then press F1 key to RESET. Try ressetting all RAM.

If more keys refuse to respond then maybe you should contact TI-cares at education.ti.com

Use the >Frac and >Dec commands in the MATH menu. Press the MATH button to bring up the menu.

Press APPS. Scroll up or down to reach Inequalz and press ENTER. The inequalz application will know control function graphing. Open the Y= editor to enter at least two inequalities . Use the tabs at the bottom to type in the relational operators. You will have to press [ALPHA] followed by [F1], or [F2], etc

Press the GRAPH function key (F5) to draw the graphs. You get the two regions superposed (original shading).

Press [ALPHA][F1 or F2] to activate the [SHADES] tab. This open up the following screen.

On this screen you can choose the type of shading 1: Intersection of the two regions ( the part of the plane that satisfies both inequalities, 2 the union of the two regions or 3 the original shading (as compared to choice 2). Selecting option 1:intersection gives you the following screen.

try to reset the screen

install the 4 batteries

take out 1 battery

press and hold these keys let arrow+ right arrow+ 2nd + on and then install the battery

this should reset the screen if it will not help then its a problem with the LCD

I assume you know how to enter data in your calculator. The keystrokes in the following pertain to TI92/92Plus/ Voyage 200 PLT. The main differences with the TI89/Ti89 Titanium is that the function keys F6,F7,F8 are not accessed directly but by the key sequences [2nd][F1], [2nd][F2], and [2nd][F3] respectively

1. CLEAN THE SLATE (so to speak) and ENTER DATA

In Home folder run F6: NewProb to reset the configuration.

Press Apps, and select 6: data/Matrix editor. Select a new data set

Give it a name: here testing.

Press OK/ENTER, The data entry screen opens, enter your values.

When you finish press F2.PlotSetUp.

2. Statistical plot setup and scatter plot drawing

Press F1:define to configure Plot1. Choose Scatter, then choose a mark for the data point. I select 5:Dot. and press [ENTER

Select the data column X=c1, Y=c2

Press ENTER to save configuration. Press [CTRL] [GRAPH] On my TI92 the CTRL key is the [Diamond] key. On the following graph I changed the mark to a cross to see the data point better. I also played with the window dimension. You can also do that with ZoomStat. The graph remind me of a parabola (I know I chose the exact values)

3. STATISTICAL CALC. AND REGRESSION ANALYSES.

Now we have to find the equation that fits these data best.

You press APPS 6:Data/ Matrix editor but you select current to return to your data set. You are taken to the data entry editor (Figure 3 above). In that screen Press F5:Calc to edit the type of statistics you want

On first line select the type of regression model : Linear Regression, QuadReg quadratic regression (or anything else available) X is from column1, Y is from column 2. Store RegEQ The regression equation in say Y1(x)

Press ENTER to save to get the Regression Equation. Here it is

As you can see I cheated: a perfect parabola. R^2 =1.

And here the best fit represented on same graph as the statistical data

Usually you have to try different regression models, until you find the one that fits best the experimental data.

The calculator does not give a result of an integration with a constant. The form of the result will depend ob the EXACT/APPROXIMATE mode you have selected.

In the following screen capture, your integral has been evaluated with mode set to EXACT,AUTO, and APPROXIMATE. Pay attention to the syntax.

To set the computational mode to EXACT, press the MODE button use the Function keys F1,F2 or F3 to move from page to page, point to EXACT/APPROX and use the right arrow key to unfold the submenu, then the Up or Down arrow to select AUTO, EXACT or APPROXIMATE and press ENTER to SAVE Configuration.

If the integral cannot be found in EXACT mode, the calculator will echo the command without calculating the integral.

As you know, the calculator uses a system of menus activated by the F1, F2, F3, etc. keys. However when a submenu menu option is not available in the context of a problem, it will show on the display as a greyed out option (fuzzy) and it cannot be chosen.

Press [F1] ( not mecessary now because the F1 page is open by default). In the F1 page of configuration screen set Xmin=-10,

Xmax=10

Ymin=-10

Ymax=10

Xscale=1.

Yscale=1.

OR

Press [Diamond][F2:Window][F2][6:ZoomStd] (Zoom Standard) to set all values as above.

If a graph is active (axes displayed, or part of a curve is showing) press [F2:Zoom][6:ZoomStd]

If to much memory is being used up the calculator will behave like that. Sometimes if you download programs (mainly ASM) that didn't work with your hardware version (mainly 2) you can get this types of problems. I would be willing to work with you more on this by email if you like.

Go to the graph app (diamond + f3)

to the graph apps settings (f1 , then 9: Format)

turn off discontinuity detection

go to the window setupt (diamond + f2)

change xres to 2.0

to the graph apps settings (f1 , then 9: Format)
