Tractor stalls when engaging the clutch/brake

Craftsman 917.256550
I have ad the tractor since new 17 yrs, always serviced it myself. Resently had a broken snapring in the Hydrostatic tranmission. After re-assembly I can hold the belt in manually (not recommened) but when I release the clutch/brake the engine stalls. how do you setup the brake on the trasmission? May be mine is warn out? or is there a way to release this?

Thanks, Ron

There is a safety switch on the clutch pedal, that's not the problem
look at the seat safety switch .

Blades wont engage have 12 volts to the clutch when switch is pulled.

The clutch is electro magnetic, once 12 volts is sent throught the windings the clutch engages, so if it does not engage there is more than likley a brake in the internal windings which unfortunatley will mean a new clutch.

Craftsman Model 917.259566 Tractor starts perfectly, but stalls out when the clutch is released. Whats happening?

Most likely your seat safety switch is not working. In order for the engine to run with blade engaged, the operator present switch must be made when the brake is taken off (releasing clutch).

Tractor Will Not Move And Dies When Brake Is Released

I would check the wires and clean the connectors and make sure seat switch is working. If that is not working, it's like getting off the seat without holding the brake/clutch pedal down or getting off seat with blades engaged. Both will cause engine to die.
