SOURCE: XP does'nt recognise Handycam

Hello Laura. You cannot transfer video from this camcorder with a USB cable. You will need a DV cable. This cable did not come with your camcorder. You will also need software for the transfer process. Windows Movie Maker can do this although I've never used it. I used a product called Scenalyzer. There is a free demo version at www.scenealyzer.com, but it will leave a watermark on your video if you don't pay for it. You might try Windows Movie Maker first if you already have it.

Once you have captured the video on your computer, you cannot just burn it to a DVD as a file if you want to play it in DVD players. This too requires special software.

I'm travelling for work right now, but when I get home in a few days I can be of more help. If you want to keep going on this, get a DV cable and see if you can capture the video with Windows Movie Maker and let me know.

Installed macromedia flash player. After a short period of time, left plugged in and running, wizard detection of new program kicked in and went through series of setups. Screen stays small but does allow to download to computer.

How can I download video from a sony mini_dv camcorder to my laptop which does not have a firewire connection?

IEEE 1394 or firewire is the only reliable method.
If you just want to get the footage to a computer for playback only then:
There are USB converters on the market.
Most covert the files to non-editable codecs so if you wish to edit the footage:
You could transcode those file back to DV but this is a bad workflow.Having a computer with a firewire port and appropriate editing software is your best option.

I am having a sony hi 8 ccd trv 58 model handycam. i want a driver to transfer my videos to my personal computer. any free drivers available?

CCD-TRV58 is analog camcorder and can not be connected with computer directly as camcorder does not have USB or iLink/ DV ports.
Computer needs digital format movie data to store / edit files.
You need to hook camcorder audio-video out to DVD recorder and burn DVD of camcorder movie so you will get digital format of movie. Put that DVD in computer and copy files for further process.

To transfer tape data to computer

the way you can transfer your videos on your computer is by using USB cable and install the driver to your computer. You can upload your videos by saving it on ULEAD products. As far as i know you cant transfer videos from disc to your memory card unless it was been converted but you cant view or watch it on your camcorder itself only computer can play this because your camcorder is not able to play such converted files.
i will give you a step by step on your camcorder.

  • connect your camcorder using your USB cable to your computer and be sure it is ON
  • Install the cd driver camed with your camcorder. if you didnt prompt on looking for a driver then go to the add hardware on the control panel and follow the procedure there.
  • after the installation you should see the icon on the my computer labeled scanners and cameras and indicating the model of your camcorder.
  • Install Ulead Power Producer or any editing movie that you have like Windows movie maker, nero movier maker etc.. i prefer to use Ulead because its so easy to use
  • after uploading and editing your videos using ULEAD save it on any various types of videos that you like. you should see it after you want to save it.
  • burn your videos on NERO software
Hope you understand my procedures. Let me know if you have problems Good Luck!

Sony Handycam DCR-HC28

Unfortunately, it's not exactly a trivial process. The basic steps are as follows:

1) connect the camcorder to the computer
2) transfer the video from the dv tape to a file on the computer
3) optionally, edit the video file
4) upload the file from the computer to youtube.com

1) the camcorder has 4-pin 1394 (also called firewire or i-link) jack, and the computer (if equipped) either has 6-pin 1394 jack or 4-pin 1394 jack (on some notebooks). if your computer doesn't have a 1394 jack, you need to buy a 1394 adapter (eg. pricegrabber.com)

2) transfer the video from the dv tape to a file on the computer hard drive using editing software or a software utility designed for doing just that. this software may come with the camcorder or the 1394 adapter.

3) optionally, use editing software to take an excerpt from the file, rearrange parts of the video, add titles, etc., and output a new file

4) upload the file to youtube.com. there are some guides on their website as well (eg. youtube.com)

I hope that helps.

Computer mode

hi follow this steps: Make sure that you have installed the USB driver for the handycam. You can download the drivers from this link: Sony Asia Pacific Support Website--Download Page for HC40E USB Driver for Windows. Connect the handycam to the AC adaptor (the same as putting it on charge). Set the handycam to USB stream mode. (Press P-menu, press MENU, Press EDIT/PLAY, Press USB MODE, Press USB Stream.) Set the tape at the point from where you want to start capturing in PC. Connect the handycam and the PC with the USB cable. (USB-Mode appears on the handycam LCD / viewfinder.) Start Windows Movie Maker. Click on the 'Capture..' link to start the wizard. Select the Sony Digital Imaging Device. Click Next. Specify the file name and path for the capture video. Click Next. Select the desired capture format and Click Next. (Leave it to recommended setting if you are not sure.) The dialog box now displays the Start Capture and End Capture buttons on the left and preview window on the right. Play the tape on the handycam. The video from handycam should appear in the preview window of WMM. Click the Start Capture button to start capturing the video. Click End Capture to pause or stop recording. Click the Finish button. The .wmv file will be saved in the path specified in step 7.
