Cpu does not choose the RAM , its the motherboard that you should look into.  if you can give us the exact model of your dell pc, or better yet the Exact model of your motherboard, we can easily tell you if its supported... usually Pentium 3 computers use SDRAM modules

Not so much a problem but I have an old Dell dimension with an 866 inteleron processor. I have 2 slots for Ram, each with 256 mb totalling 512, my question is can I replace them with 2 512's for 1plus gb...

Yes you can install 2 512 mb RAM for 1Gb in motherboard.But make sure both 512 RAM are same in configuration and frequency it is better you purchase both ram of same company.Then it works.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

Swaping hdd 845 motherboard to 915 motherboard

its always safe to have data backed up

u can swap the HDD

but bootup with the Win2K CD in the Drive and after the files are loaded at the first screen select install then after it detects the OS select R (Repair) and this will reinstall the operating system files and then you can use the system as before though u may have to install the device drivers and motherboard drivers

for any other clarifications u can place a comment in the same question or u can mail me at mail2pvs@gmail.com

Velocity and frecuency bios configuration

The best configuration? Well you would need PC100 ram, set the bios settings to 7.5 as the multiplier and 100 as the FSB... please let me know if you need more information than that.

My pc is extremely slow, I have even formatted and instal a new version of Windows Xp service pack 2 to my PC pentium-3 with 256 RAM but there is still no change. Need some one to help me out.

slow pc is the cause of many problems.
1=firstly,use disk cleanup.
2=secondly,regularly defragment your hard disk.
3=thirdly,try to switch over to pentium 4 3.0 Ghz or intel core 2 duo.
4=at last,change your motherboard to ddr2 Ram supporting Board.

UpGrade

you could only upgrade the processor and RAM in this condition i.e.

you can only change your an upgraded p-III processor like 1.0 GHz, 1.1 GHz or 1.3GHz and
upgrade the RAM by changing to 256 in each slot.

that is all what u can do with ur pc
