Question about GE JVM1653 Microwave Oven

1 Answer

My GE model JVM1653 is smelling, not heating

The unit turns on normally, then after a couple seconds the sound changes tone to a deeper hum I've never heard. This is accompanied by a smell like plastic is burning. The unit is 6 years old. Is the unit dead, or fixable?

Assuming your inside light and turntable come on when you try to microwave, with the symptoms you have, I would most strongly suspect a shorted high voltage rectifier diode or a bad magnetron, or a loose and possibly corroded connection on the magnetron's terminal.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html
(if it's not shorted or burned, it's probably okay)

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

Some manufacturers will send you the magnetron to do it yourself. If nothing else, you can save about $75 by taking it to the shop yourself.

Accessing some components for testing and possible replacement will require you to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

GE Customer Service is here if you want to check no the warranty or find a local servicer.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Our JVM1653 stopped cooking, everything else works

Please note that FixYa is not currently notifying us Experts when Clarification Requests are answered.

To allow us to help you effectively (at no charge), please post a
NEW problem to FixYa, and please include your brand name and the full model number from the tag in or on the unit, your symptoms, as well as the answers to these questions:

- When you try to microwave are the inside light, internal cooling fan and turntable all working?

- Is there any unusual noise or is it louder or quieter than normal?

(A loud buzz, hum, or groan is usually a shorted high voltage rectifier diode, but a sound like gurgling into an empty coffee mug is one symptom of a failed magnetron, and yet the mag can be bad without that sound.)

We have a sound clip here of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are working.

My GE model JVM1653 has problems when heating I

Take the 2 screws out of the top outside grill. Take the 1 screw out of the top of the control panel. Lift the panel slightly and it will tilt out and hang there. Try a cook cycle with the panel in this position. If it works, your problem is interference from your magnetron. It is very common on these units. I do not recommend adding EMI shielding with tin foil as many have been suggesting on the help sites. If you are still under warranty, call GE. If not, call GE and threaten to sue. This is a known problem with these units and they should have been recalled.

GE Spacemaker XL1800 does not heat. All other functions appear to be working normally, the light comes on and the turntable functions. When turned on, it makes a humming noise slightly louder than normal,...

Possible bad heating element, You should remove the cover of the unit and look at the heating element with the power off. Until you get your problem resolved I would recommend not to even turn it on due to the fact that you are unsure what is going on and you smelt some burnt smell. Just for safety until you fine the problem

Microwave makes deep humming sound and doesn't heat

Your magnetron that actually does the cooking is making that humming sound. That part needs to be replaced before it starts blowing your fuse inside the microwave. That part is the one located on top behind the control panel of your microwave and is about the size of a persons hand (sometimes smaller sometimes bigger). With everthing unplugged you can take the cover off and see it. It has some cooling fins on it and is held in place with only three to four screws. There are three to four wires that come out of it and go to only a couple of places one of them being a large capacitor that is about three to four inches long with terminals at its top. Find a magnetron at a local tv repair shop (reputable), a local electronic supply house (they can order you one) or on the internet. They cost from $25 to $60 depending on size of microwave. If you can do it yourself you can save about $40 to $50. Let me know how it goes. Good luck.

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:

- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose conneciton on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical safety information, info on door switch diagnosis and replacement, and
