I took a bunch of pictures last month, and only now, when looking at the pictures, about 1/3 of them have a blue screen and say "File Error"! Help!! I hadn't uploaded these pics yet and would be very sad to lose them.

A New memory card is always an answer.
However there may be valuable shots on the that need recovery.

Moreover if as 'Apprentice' you have to replace a card several times this does point to a camera fault not a card fault.r

Welcome to Fixya.

Ther three reasons why do you received an "READ ERROR" message:

1. The file is corrupt ot was not created with the camera.
- the file can not be played back
2. The memory card contacts require cleaning
- Clean the contacts with soft and dry cloth. If the message is repeated, format the memory card. If the message persist, replace the memory card.
3. Camera malfunction

The vids on my Sony DSC-T90 won't play and I can't record. The camera says' "file error"

The LCD screen may display a FILE ERROR message when trying to view a still image on the camera if the image was rotated, modified and overwritten using editing software on a computer. To play images you have taken on the camera, it is recommended that you do not make any changes to the original image files.

My FujiFilm FinePix F47 fd has an error message that keeps saying 'Read Error' Help Please!!!

Hi,

The Read Error message displayed on the Camera when accessing the images which was not recorded correctly. This may also happen when the Memory Stick is corrupted to record or read the files. Please check if the message is displaying when accessing all the images. If it happens with all the images, then it may be an issue with the Camera or the Memory Stick.
To check if the issue is with the Memory Stick, try using a different Memory Stick and check if the message displays. This may also happen when an attempt was made to play back the image or the movie that was not recorded on this camera.
Try to wipe the contact area on the Memory Card with a soft, dry cloth. It may be necessary to format the Memory Card (Format option is available in the Setup 2 Menu of the Camera). If the message still appears, service may be required.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Hi,

You may not be able to copy the videos other than the one captured in the Camera, as the Camera file system will not accept the file format of other video recordings. The File error message displays when you try to copy or edit the files in the Memory Stick. This may cause all the other images to be corrupted. I suggest that you do not copy the files to Memory Stick which will damage the images already captured in the Camera.
The Camera will not accept the files even if the file names are different as the Camera creates its own file name for videos recorded in it. You may try copying the videos to the folder in the Camera where the movies are recorded with the same file name of the videos. However, this is not recommended.

Why AVI file is not playing in sp800uz cameras

Maybe there was an error while recording, rendering your avi file useless for playback in the camera. But the camera is not made to play avi files from other sources. Check if your SD / SDHC memorycard is in good condition (reformat it to check).

I lost some files from my Ultra HD Flip Cam during the copy process to my laptop. I used a recovery software to retrieve the missing/deleted files off the Flip Cam without issue. I cannot play the...

file recovery softwares will find a lot of files, most of those files will not be recoverable though, they will have been overwritten and contain random content mostly, you can\t fix these files if they don\t play in vlc media player after being recovered.

the content has probably been overwritten, the files could be months old etc.

vlc can\t recognize the format because the files are corrupt. If a file is OK it will play back on vlc media player, if it does not play back its been corrupted beyond repair.

All you need is VLC and FFDSHOW, K lite pack has it, so you got all the decoders that you would need to play back a file.

frankly, you are just waisting your time if you don\t believe me.

On playback, I get the message this motion image cannot be played, why?

Each video recorded on camera creates a thumbnail picture file which is linked to the movie file, but is stored in another folder. When you delete the movie file on camera via PC, this thumbnail file will be become "orphaned", left in the camera and causes this error message "this movie image cannot be played". You also cannot delete it! At this stage the only solution is to first make sure you do not have any remaining pictures left and format the sandisk. From then on, never delete the movies in camera from PC but only direct from the camera. Posted by Forest.

Canon ixus camera says my movie clip is an error

The video files your particular camera makes should be AVI format. What media player are you using? I've heard of problems playing AVI files with Windows Media Player.
Try using a different media player like VLC or Winamp. There are also video format conversion programs out there for free. I use anyvideoconverter for that. You can get all of those programs from cnet.com's download center.
