While installing updates on my laptop I switched it off as i thought it had crashed. Since then I've not been able to get it to boot. I've tried reintalling Win 7 OS and an old windows image but this hasn't helped resolve the problem. I keep getting a message saying that there is no hard drive installed. I've reinstalled the SATA hard-disk drivers but this has not resolved the problem. When I get access to the DOS prompt...i can't see the c: but I can see an x: with recovery files. My drive is a 500GB hard disk with a c: and a d: (data drive with all my files) and a restore drive. Any help in resolving this problem would be appreciated.
This is an easy one, your hard drive has failed this is why it does not show up, I am suprised that you dont hear clicking noise when trying to access the drive. if you have another drive around try to connect that one just to see if you give different error message but I am %100 you have a failed drive, I used to work at gateway/Quanta and have serviced thousands of machines with the same problem, good luck

The problem most likely - the laptop is old and the BIOS most likely cannot support a hard disk with a capacity of 120Gb.
Check the capacity of the old hard disk, most likely it is about 10 to 20Gb in size and you cannot buy one these days with these capacity.

The best option is to install WinXP on the new drive, partition the drive
C:, D:, E: etc
and use C for WinXP
Once you are done with WinXP install Win7 in D
let me know

Purchase a new (or used) disk-drive that is compatible with your Acer notebook.
Remove the current disk-drive, and set it aside.
Connect this "alternate" disk-drive, and install Windows onto it.
Then, test the CD/DVD drive -- if it still gives problems, then you have a "hardware" problem with the CD/DVD drive, and trying to make any "configuration" changes within Windows will have *NO* effect.
