Exact type and size of battery needed for dell 8200 pc desktop, how to remove the old one and put in new one

Desktops only have a very small battery for maintaining the clock, it will not keep the machine turned on after power is removed.
If you open the side of the desktop (once you've turned it off and removed the power cord), you will see a small coin cell battery on the motherboard (main panel). Generally this is a watch battery like a CR2032, or something similar. You can gently pry this out of the holder and replace it with an identically numbered battery.

You can go to support.dell.com website, choose Drivers & Downloads, enter your computer's service tag (which can be found on a sticker attached to your machine's case) and then from the list of options on the left choose System Configuration (ignoring the further options to refine search in the center of the page).

It will show you the system components as shipped from the factory.

A 320MB harddisk is prehistoric, I beleive you mean 320GB. It has to be established what type of harddrive you have (with ATA or SATA interface) and purchase an appropriate type. If you want to add it as a second disk, it'll be simpler, if you want to replace the existing one, you'll need to either copy the existing contents to the new drive, or install the system and all the applications on the new drive from scratch. Both operations require some more advanced computer skills.

Do you memory as in ram? this motherboard can take upto 4gb or if you meant hard drive space then anything upto 1 tb

Easy to get cr2032 battery.

Often simply disconnecting the power cable, holding power button for 15 seconds, release power button, plug back in will work

Otherwise remove CMOS battery and perform above operation

Sounds like the drive from the 4700 is a SATA drive which uses a different connector than the 40-pin IDE. I couldn't confirm it, but the 8200 may not have SATA connectors for this type of drive. Although the 4700 appears to have both SATA and IDE.

If the power button does not light up at all, I would guess the power supply has a problem.

Yes it will work. You probably will have to use the CD that came with the drive to make sure the HD is recognized.

I would recommend buying a replacement computer, and install the Dell IDE drive in an external 3.5" IDE hard drive enclosure. This way you can pull your information off the the Dell hard drive, and then blow it away.

Keep in mind that new computers use a SATA drive, your old Dell '8200 has an IDE drive. Also keep in mind that your Dimension 8200 drivers won't work on the new computer.

You might be able to install your Dell drive as a slave if you have an open IDE channel available.

Good news is, your old Dell uses RAMBUS memory, which is worth a lot. It's a good parts computer, and most people who look for computer parts know of the bad capacitor issue on Intel made Dell motherboards from that era.
