My Little Giant APCP 1700 stopped running even when submerged. Now its stuck in a continuous run mode after I played around with the automatic float stick position. Why is it stuck in this run mode?

The floats are mechanical on these pumps, unlike the electronic ones on other models , the floats can get stuck on them most common reason is forign object stuck up inside area of float (leaves, tree droppings etc)

Only way to shut off Little Giant sump pump is to unplug it. What is making it run all the time?

Assuming that your pump has a built in float switch, I would suggest that the float switch is frozen, stuck or damaged. If you have an underwater pump that does not have such a switch then it probably is designed to only be used manually. I have a little giant pump which is designed to go underwater but must be plugged in to use and unplugged to stop. I'm assuming you have had this pump a while and in the past has always worked automatically. Again , if yours is automatic, it's the switch. Unless it's a simple thing like a frozen arm, I doubt you can fix it unless you can replace the entire waterproof assembly without tearing into it. It must remain waterproof to be electrically safe.
You may find that only a factory repair will be the proper solution.

Motor runs but pumping mechanism simply falls out?

A motor shop can get you parts or rebuild it for you, If it is just a impeller it's probally pretty reasonable and then you have a spare.

There is power to the pump, but the pump will not come on. It has a pressure switch, the contacts are making contact, but the motor doesn't run. what should i check for?

Sometimes around the area of the motor there is a little button that is usually red that is made to "trip" if the pump got hot or overloaded. Push this button back in to reset if it has on. Most pumps have this button to keep them from burning up if overloaded.
