We ran a typical Compaq presario cq60 battery of tests, including games, applications, and a couple other areas. Time constraints limited the amount of testing we could get done before the NDA lift (and it's already a few hours late), but we will be providing a follow-up article with further testing and information. That said, if there are any specific areas that you'd like to see tested, feel free to e-mail me or leave a comment.
If you have changed OS, your problem probably is not due to malware or bloat.
Upgraded to 2gb ram, new hard drive. And still you think it is too slow.
I think either you are too fussy, and expect too much OR your laptop has major problems at a chipset level.
Have you tried running some benchmark software to check if it really is running slow???
I would Do a fresh install of windows, SELL it and change to a different model.
Try checking a couple of reviews on sites like Custom PC, for a good fast laptop.

You need to check the specs of your laptop to see what is the maxium amount of RAM your laptop can support.
Although you can see one DIMM slot there may be another under the keyboard that already has a DIMM installed.
DIMM are avail in up to 4Gb most common 1Gb and 2Gb.
Have you cleared the temporary internet files? Also, download ccleaner (its free) this will delete unneeded files from the registry. You should also run and antivirus and antispyware program followed by defragging the hard drive. That should improve your speed.
you may have other bottleneck... maybe the XP you're using doesn't utilizes the multi core in your computer or maybe office 2007 is not enjoying your ram size? these are just few factors that can affect your system performance.
