Question about Freecom (24358) 160 GB Network Hard Drive

1 Answer

Freecom network drive corrupted

The drive worked ok, but not perfectly for a couple of years.
It was in a hot closet and when I tried to access it both via the network and via USB I get the following message when I click on the drive in My Computer. I also can't use the explore option.

F:\ is not accessible
The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.

I'm posting a solution to my problem as I think it might help others with similar problems.

I spoke with a number of experts and they all basically said that the disk would need to be sent away for the data to be extracted. Freecom themselves told me to format the disk.

I was about to dismantle the unit to extract the disk when I thought I would give it one final try. I plugged it into the USB socket of different laptop which happened to be running VISTA.

It started working! I then plugged it back into my old Windows 2000 machine and it also worked. It has now been working perfectly for almost a month connected to a hub as a network drive.

A software friend told me that what probably happened was the the disk configuration got corrupted and the VISTA software actually corrected it automatically as soon as it was connected to the USB socket!

It may be a coincidence that the disk started working but this is the first time that I have seen any possible advantage to the VISTA operating system!

Sounds like it needs re-formating.

You might try> http://www.freecom.com/ecSupport.asp

Look through there to see if they have a utility that can sort the problem out....
Or a FAQ section where there might be a bit of help with the problem...

These drives need to be in open air or they can overheat and stop working.

Right click on the F:\ ,click format.

Look to see if the details of the drive are in the window.

Capacity ? 150gb ? or something close.
File system NFTS ?

If these details are there you can format the disk again.

My computer has found new hardware for my freecom external storag

It should automatically allocate a drive letter to it. Go to windows explorer and hit F5 to refresh the display and you should see a new drive letter with the name of FREECOM next to it.

My 250gb hard drive is not working

Assuming this external hard drie is powered via USB, you probably just need the drivers:

Hard Drive not detected

If you are sure that the disk is okay, then I do suspect it is a power problem. Laptop USB ports often can not provide as much power as desktop USB ports. If possible try using an external power adapter with the disk and see if that works.
You can try some other external hard disk troubleshooting ideas, but probably it is the power.

Files need updating but we have nothing to update them from

Just a long shot but my corrupted Freecom disk started working problem after I simply plugged it into the USB port of a laptop running VISTA. Worth a try as VISTA has the ability to uncorrupt disk structures.

Freecom 160GB Hard drive not recognised

Drives do fail Nick. Is it powering up [power supply problem?] Plug it in and go to Start/Control Panel/Admin tools/computer management/storage/ removable storage and disk management. See if the disc is recognised there. If it is not, and if the disk is spinning Try putting it into the deep freeze overnight. Plugging in next morning and if it fires up get as much off as possible before it goes down again.
