could be the inverter its inside the monitor at the bottom they cost about 10.00 could also be the integrated video which needs to be reflowed some repair shops charge up to 150.00 which is crazy i do that all the time for 50.00 its easy also there is a sensor that can go out and the laptop thinks the lid is shut again about 10.00
Have you checked the temperature of your system? At most of the cases like yours the reason is high temperature. In that case shut down your laptop and eject the battery. Use a sobt brush (and if possibe air under pressure) to clean up pedantically the air blinds all around the laptop. In case of using air under pressure leave the laptop to "rest" (and the temperatures and humidity to balance) for about 15 minutes. After that check for your problem again.

Toshiba usually has a power configuration utility for this... when on battery, reduce your inactive time values to the minimum... suggested ...screen off in 1-2 minutes and harddrive should shut down in 2-5 minutes. system standby in 15 minutes, hibernate in 1 hour.
If it's an overheating problem, updates won't help, cooling will. With the unit turned off, blow out all vents & screens on the bottom, sides & back of the unit. Get a cooling unit to put under the laptop. Mine dropped the temperature about 30 degrees and it hasn't shut off since I started using it.
If it's not from overheating, the way you have Vista setup to view different users windows should be changed.
