Small office, single NW5/SP6a Server, 10-users, NDPS to 3 HP JetDirect devices vis HP Gateway v2.10a, 2 additional devices via LPR/LPD (hanging off workstations).
The office plans to purchase a Ricoh copier & wants to network it. The specs show a Type 1027 NIC, 10BT/100BTX/RJ45, & NW5 as a supported NOS - no problem. Question: Will the HP Gateway see this device, or must it be configured using the Novell GW?
Or would printing directly from the workstation to copier via IP or whatever be a better setup?
We were forced into using it for a while with the consequences of very bad NDPS Manager database corruption and the Ricoh gateway being a "CPU Hog" on the server so often that connections to our HP printers would time out -- lots of Helpdesk calls.
We had 10 printers on the Ricoh gateway which caused problems for our other 190 HP printers.
We're now putting JetDirects on them and using the HP gateway which is working very well (there are two JetDirect settings to tweak though).
Donald,
Note that Ricoh also has an NDPS gateway for their Afico series of printers with network interface. I don't know if their network printing enabled copiers use the same interface, but if they do, they probably work with the Ricoh gateway as well. Nevertheless, I would recommend you to use the Novell gateway which is overall more robust. I have had some occasional problems with Ricoh printer agents falling asleep and needing a shutdown/restart to start printing again.

HP Gateway should only find HP devices. So for the Ricoh, you should use the Novell Gateway. It won't cause any problems, it just may not have as many features as the other gateways...
