Re: using free wifi spots
If your laptop has wifi enabled, and you go to a place where there is a hotspot, you right-click on the little wireless icon in the system tray and choose "view available wireless networks." If one shows up and you can identify it, choose it and then click "connect." But--beware--if you can't identify the network as being in the store/coffee house, etc where you are sitting, don't try to connect to it. This is an open invitation for identity thieves and other bad guys to get access to your computer.

same way you connect to any wifi. switch on the hot spot option in the device u r using as a hot spot then go to your laptop and turn on the wifi.....if u r lucky the laptop will automatically search and give you an option to connect to the wifi hotspot....otherwise u will have to go to wifi settings of your laptop and manually search for the same....visit dell.com for further help.
First you need a WiFi wireless card or an USB WiFi adapter. This will allow you to connect to a free WiFi hot spot location such as MacDonalds, Starbucks etc. If you want to setup your own wireless network at home the you need a wireless router and then configure the wireless card/adapter in your computer with the router's wireless settings.
SETTING UP A BROADBAND CONNECTION First you need to decide what type of broadband andInternet service you require and these are - 1. DSL that uses your existing telephone line. 2. Cable that uses a cable service and can include a cable TV service. 3. A wireless 3G network which uses the mobile/cell phone network and can beseparate or combine with your cell phone account Note - Combined services generally offer discount pricing and may include amodem/wireless router.
If you use a wireless router with the DSL or Cable Internet service and yourlaptop has a wireless card then you can also connect to the Internet at WiFihot spots like McDonalds, Star Bucks, the Airport etc. If you use the wireless 3G wireless broadband service, then you can access theInternet anywhere where your ISP has 3G wireless coverage. You need to checkthe service coverage area where you need Internet service. Once you decide what type of broadband your require, then you need to checkwith the various Internet Service providers to see if they can offer and thecost of the various plans. Note the download limits and the associated additional costs if you exceed themonthly download limits. Once you sign up with a Internet Service provider, their documentation will include setting up instructions and/or installationCD.
If it's not seeing wifi networks, more than likely, there is something wrong with the adapter. Try these steps:
1.) Look for a WIFI switch on the side or front of your laptop and make sure it is set to the ON position.
2.) Check Device Manager to make sure the driver is installed and working. If it's not, uninstall and reinstall.
3.) Go into Network Connections and make sure the Wireless Connection is set to Enable.
4.) If none of that works, perform a System Restore to a time when everything was working.
5.) If this doesn't work, you need a WIFI adapter replacement.
I hope this is helpful and thanks for using Fixya!
That switch is controller by the HP Wireless Assistant software. If you installed other WiFi software, that may cause problems with the WiFi button. You can try installing the latest version of HP Wireless Assistant. Download from your product's page at the HP support website.
