Always turn the handwheel TOWARDS you (counter clockwise) as turning it in the opposite direction (away from you, clockwise) may knock the timing out requiring repair from a service center.
Always be sure your presser foot is in the DOWN position before sewing. Sewing with the presser foot in the up position will cause your thread to tangle and your bobbin to jam.
Change needles regularly (after 16 hours of use) as dull/weak needles can cause damage to your machine and fabric. Only use SINGER needles on your SINGER sewing machine.
Always be sure you are using the correct bobbin for your machine. Class 66, Class 15 and Class 15J bobbins look very similar. However, using the incorrect bobbin class in your machine can cause damage.
Maybe in the stitch pattern you have chosen it won't go unless another has matched it. My Pfaff did this to me the other day. Puzzled and decided it was the first time I used that stitch. Changed it, and it worked.
I would try replacing the needle, as it may have got bent. I have had this happen and I was sure needle wasnt effected. when I changed needle it was fixed. The very tip of my old needle had a slight curve and wasnt connecting to correct spot on throat plate. make sure you have needle in highest position and that stitch selection in turned back to straight stitch.
Make & Model would be helpful Did you have a Thread/Fabric Jam ?? Sounds likely to be a timing issue. For a full and detailed response I will direct you to THIS LINK NOTE: Please use this phrase to start query: "Request Bargainbox"
1 Release the stop-motion knob on the right side of the sewing machine by turning it oward you.2 Place a spool of thread of your choice on the spool pin located toward the back of the sewing machine.3 Pull thread from the spool through the threading knob on the top of the machine.4 Pull 2 to 3 inches of thread through one of the holes on the bobbin. Hand-wrap thread around the bobbin in an anti-clockwise direction five or six times.5 Place the wrapped bobbin on the bobbin spindle.6 Push the winder spindle to the right, against the stopper, and depress the foot pedal to begin winding.7 Wind bobbin until completed, then return winder spindle to its original position.8 Tighten the stop-motion knob.
see if it will work without the needle .. make sure the needle is not bent .. make sure you dont have a single (non zigzag) foot on the machine while its in zig zag mode .. the needle will hit the foot in this case .. if the machine will run without a needle and fails even with a straight needle then there could be a timing issue .. the top part of the sewing machine is syncronized with the bottom part via a shaft and some gears .. these are adjustable by a tech person .. everything has to happen at the right time if that relationship is changed thru slipage or wear then the machine may jam up .. also if some cloth, thread or lint is cought in the bottom unit it can cause the trouble .. will it turn by hand ?? if it turns by hand freely but wont turn with the motor ... and it makes a lot of noise .. you may have a loose belt from the motor .. if its a cog belt then it will make a shuddering noise as the drive gear slips over the cogs .. the belt tension is adjustable .. it just wants to be snug not tight, not loose ..
