Question about Samsung HLN617W 61" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

SAMSUNG 61" DLP, HL S6187WX keeps shutting off

It seems to be an overheat problem because not only does it start shutting off on 'TEMP' after 3 hours but there are also fumes in the air that smell like 'burned electronic components'. They were so strong that a visiting friend had to go outside to breathe!
:-(

Weird thing is that the picture is beautiful.

Thanks, but there is lots of room around the TV, enough to walk behind it.

The TV repairman mentioned that the unit might have a color board going bad... a $300+ cost and I know the lamp & ballast are do for replacement soon. I can't understand SAMSUNG selling a Hi Fef TV that is only good for 2-1/2 years and then you have to pay $900 for a repair to make it thru the next 2-1/2 years!

This is definitely NOT what people expect when they pay $2800 for a high def TV,

The TV repairman replaced the lamp and everything works fine!

Apparently even though I had a good picture the lamp was wearing out and needed replacing. So, for all of you that are experiencing shut-down problems, if your TV is around 2-1/2 years old it's time to replace the lamp!

My Samsung 61 DLP keeps turning itself off. It is very inconsistent, sometimes it turns off every five minutes, other times it may take an hour or two before it starts turning itselt off. We have put a pedestal fan on the back of the tv (next to the bulb cover) and this seemed to work for a while, but it now seems to make no difference...

Damn annoying because the TV picture is sensational.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem (I have already changed the bulb - but no improvement)

Make sure there is plenty of air flow around DLP, If nothing is restricting the air flow then the fan may have a problem.
Dont use your DLP until the problem is diagnosed by a tech. Not only will you shorten the lamp life you can do unrepairable damage to the TV.
Call Samsung to see if the TV is still under warranty.

First when I turn it on it's okay for a few minutes ,then it starts to flicker and shuts off.Three lights are on Standby/Temp/Lamp Temp and Lamp lights are blinking.

Try unplugging the TV. Remove the back panel and vacuum the dust out. Sounds like the unit may be overheating and the thermal shutoff is operating to prevent fire. Be careful not to move the projection lenses out of alignment. It is also a good time to clean those lenses carefully. It will improve your picture a lot.

My Samsung DLP model HL-P6163W keeps turning on and off and now lights are flashing. We replaced the color wheel last year and about two years ago the lamp.

could still be the lamp but it could also be the Ballast for the lamp has failed. I've replaced a lot of Ballasts on DLP machines.

TV goes off intermittently

sounds like an intermittent shut down which is heat related. some part , maybe one stuck on a heatsink is warming up and running too much current triggering shutdown.
to find it you can tell what is shutting down with a voltmeter, or you can heat suspected parts with a blow dryer to speed the shutdown .. or freeze spray to see if it goes beyond your shutdown time.

Tv shuts itself off

Look for the computer processor inside the TV. It needs to be cleaned. A can of compressed air will work. The processor is overheating and causing the tv to shut off. Look for the small fan that is supposed to keep the processor cool then remove the dust.

Good luck!

you have the same problem I have. The problem is fixed by changing the new light bulb. The problem appears again after 1500 hours of use. You can keep buying new light bulbs or avoid it by not buying another Samsung TV.
