1 Answer

AV-56WP30 jvc replaced the convergence i.c. on this tv.. Time to align convergence but when i go into convergence on the menu, it wont give me the convergence crosses to line up. it just goes back like i exited out of the menu. Here is my steps..i hit menu, scroll to convergence, the press volume up button to activate convergence. as soon as i do this it just goes back to regular tv. is there another way?

Hello tonyotteson,

I posted this in an eariler solution and there are numerous references to this type of problem on fixya.com, however it fits in this case, so here it is:

This denotes a convergence problem. Believe it or not it would be cheaper for you to replace the two convergence amplifiers and the biasing resistors. You would not actually be replacing the convergence board since these devices are usually located on the deflection board in most cases. However in answer to your question, the boards are easily removed, depending on your level of patience (lots of cables to move around), I would also advise you to either mark down all of the connection you will remove, or take pictures of the board and its connectors. If you choose to just replace the Amplifiers and the biasing resistors there is a lot of information on this site on how to do so: This will get you started:

1) Unplug the TV and then get a schematic of the TV I use http://www.servicemanuals.net or http://www.manualsparadise.com
2) On the schematic locate the STK392-xxx series IC packs (usually attached to a large heat sink)
3) determine if the STK392s are 110, 120 or 150.
4) if the STK392-xxx's are 110s replace with 110s (forget that upgrade stuff it is a hit or miss game that I don't believe you want to get into), if they are 120s replace with 120s and so on.
5)Now to replace the STKs: remove the module from the TV and unsolder theold STKs along with the bias resistors, and replace them with the newones (be sure to apply heat sink paste to the STKs when attaching them to the heatsink)
6) make sure there are no short circuits form your soldering job.
7) Reinstall the module and then turn on the TV.
8) do manual adjustment and the auto-convergence test and then things should be back to normal.

I hope this helps

    Hello tonyotteson,

Being as such you have replaced the two ICs what you can use is a crosshatch generator, or a dot pattern generator to create the patterns you will need to adjust the convergence on your TV.

Just connect the generator to the RF (F connector) on your TV turn to channel 3 and select the cross hatch pattern and begin adjusting the convergence that way, and then do a auto adjust to lock it in to the processor.

The external test set just generates a similar pattern to the internal test device only you are injecting the signal rather then using the internal test signal.

    I hope this helps,

    Thank You,

This is a 2002 model----if picture looks 3d it has a convergence problem---if you go into the customer menu with the original remote select convergence and see if it will adjust----IF the answer is no, let me know and I can tell you what is involved to repair this problem.

I have jvc-56wp30 the color convergience is way off like a 3d picture. it will not converge.

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix
