Tappan oven model tgf336bhwd oven doesn't always light

My tappan oven doesn't always light. The igniter gets red hot but the gas valve doesn't always open. Some times if I jar the oven or turn on a burner on the stove the valve will open and the oven will light. Once it lights it works fine until it sits for a while. Is it possible that the gas valve needs a good cleaning?

The pilot adjustment screw is located on the back side of the oven temperature thermostat. Lift the cook top to access it. Use a flat screwdriver to adjust... counter clockwise= bigger flame.

You need to check the connection at the back of the unit that hooks to the house power. Turn off breakers or pull fuses before checking. It sounds like you only have half of the voltage you need. One of the wire connectors may be burnt or you may have a problem with the house wiring.

I have a delay when trying to turn on to use the over, then an exploding sound. What is this? Is the ignitor going bad?

SOURCE: Hello, Can't find model/serial number.

Serial number labels are usually located in any one of a number of places -

Under the cooktop in one of the corners
Inside the oven door frame (not on the door)
Behind the bottom drawer pullout on the oven, left hand side
Oven back.

If this unit is anything less than 20 years old, there will be a label somewhere.

Reply back you findings and I can give you more information as to how to repair, and we can identify part numbers. You might also try www.repairclinic.com and see if you can drill down through parts when only knowing the manufacturer.

You will need to look and see if the igniter is glowing a bright red. If it is weak, the oven will not light. Here is the igniter if you need to order it.

Also check and make sure your getting 3.2-3.6 volts AC to the valve.

I'm trying to light my tappan oven...can't find the pilot

Your oven doesn't have a pilot,it has a flat surface igniter. If the igniter is bad or not getting the correct voltage, the safety will not allow the gas valve to open. This being said,I will say any repair involving gas is best left to a qualified tech.If its just the igniter its pretty easy to check it with a ohm meter. It should glow bright red when its calling for the oven to ignite.Hope this helps

Gas oven won't light on Tappan Centenniel. First, the burners come on, so gas is getting to it. When oven thermistat is turned on, some sort of electric igniter element glows. How does this igniter...

The inside of igniter has a probe that is heated, When it is time to light, the solenoid opens gas valve and allows gas, then that heated probe ignites the flame. After temp is reached fuel is shut off.

Tappan TGFS26C, Oven igniter not even

Lets take the oven problem first. Sounds like you have a Hot Surface Ignitor problem. This is the device that glows and lights the burner. You can buy a universal ignitor at most appliance or heating and air conditioning supply houses. Note carefully how the old one is mounted. You may have to make some adjustments to mount the new ignitor, but it MUST be close to the gas burner like the old one! You don't smell gas because the gas valve will not open until the ignitor is hot. All ignitors work with the same voltage, so simply connect the new wires to the old ones.

I'm not certain if you have a standing pilot for the stove top burners or electronic ignition. Remove the top panel to check. If you have a gas pilot, relight it. If electronic ignition, clean the ignitors. If that does not solve the problem you may have to call a technician, as these systems can be complex.

Hope this helps.

Older Tappan range oven not lighting.

There is no way to light the oven manually. The gas valve will not open until the oven ignitor draws enough current. But replacing the ignitor will fix ya up.

I suspect you may have a bad igniter. They will still glow nice and hot, but if they are weak the gas valve will not open. This is actually a safety feature. Depending on which type you have, the glow bar igniter is supposed to draw a certain current potential before the gas valve will open. Here's the current readings for both types: Round Glow Bar: 2.7 to 3.2 amps Square Glow Bar: 3.2 to 3.7 amps I would try to to determine if the igniter is good or bad before proceeding with a gas valve replacement. Generally, the igniter is a common fail item. Let me know if this helps.

Oven not always working

MOre than likely your igniter is getting weak. If it doesnt pull enough amperage. it shouldnt let gas into the oven. If it is letting in gas and not igniting, I would suggest a new igniter and a new safety valve. Hope this helps!
