This is the 2nd laptop in 2 days with the exact same fault.
All other sound systems work just not with any DVD. Says Error - Audio format is not supported by the current application. Please launch %s in MCE.
Tried with pre-recorded and home made DVD.
CD's and memory cards all produce sound - please help!!!!!
I have the exact same problem. I have an acer 5735 laptop with windows vista basic built in. Everything is fine until I try to play my wedding DVD which is Home made. The picture is perfect but I get no sound and this message
audio format is not supported by current application.please launch %s in MCE
Someone said I need to pay and upgrade to vista premium but this seems a little unfair as it isn't cheap.

If the audio works good otherwise (you can play some Windows sounds or go on Youtube and play a clip), then you likely have a partially bad DVD drive. I've seen partially bad DVD drives that had done exactly that. Don't know what model HP you have, but HP usually puts out its service manuals on its website and getting a DVD dive replaced yourself shouldn't be overly difficult. Best place to buy a replacement drive would be on eBay, and anything other than a DVD-write should be pretty cheap ($10-$20); DVD-writers cost slightly more.
Does the laptop play CDs?
If so then when you start a DVD and before you play the movie, go into the audio setting and configure the speakers for laptop stereo speakers.
If you cannot hear music from the CD then check :-
1. The audio settings, volume not set to minimum and mute is not ticked (enabled)
2. Device manager - sound device is enabled and working, if not re-install the sound driver.
HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop PC
Did you 'turn off' the AUTOPLAY feature of the CD\DVD ? When the player "runs two times at startup", it is trying to find the program on the disc.2nd- Look in internet for HP dv6000 cd\dvd drive replacement.(If that is the ""exact match for the product"" you wrote about) 3rd.goto CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM>HARDWARE>DEVICE MANAGER and look up cd\dvd and uninstall it. REBOOT, when your system comes back it will try to find the cd\dvd. If it does not, it is damaged (kaput!), must be replaced. If Windows finds the cd\dvd drive and reinstalls the drivers, but it does not work, then the heads are dirty or damaged. That Windows found the dvd\cd means that the circuit on the device works.
You probably need to clean out the pc. Get rid of programs that are not needed or used. Do a "Disk Cleanup", Defrag until it takes only about 1-2 min to complete. Get an Anti-spyware/malware as well as an Anti-spyware program and run it once a week.
You might want to also invest in more RAM. 512mb these days isnt much.
