It means to say that the wireless card driver is not installed properly. Try to uninstall it from the device manager and then reinstall it.

I am currently using a wireless 'dongle' to connect to the internet but I feel that it would probably give me a more stable connection if I had a wireless card. Can anyone give me details of

Hi Lynda,
The best option for you would be to purchase a wireless PCI network card.
They are relatively inexpensive and should have a stronger signal over a longer distance than a wireless USB dongle.
Below is a typical wireless network card and it should be freely available from your local PC store

I have included a brief explanation for your convenience:

A PCI wireless adapter card connects to a desktop computer's PCI bus. Because the PCI bus is contained inside the computer, the unit must be opened and the wireless network adapter installed inside.
An example of a PCI wireless adapter card, the Linksys WMP54G is shown above. This unit is more than 8 inches (200 mm) long in order to accommodate the standard connection strip required to electrically join to the bus. The unit attaches and fits snugly inside the PCI, although the wireless adapter card antenna protrudes out the back of the computer

Best wishes,

Reinstalled xp now cant connect to the internet

Make sure you have drivers for your network card. Wireless or ethernet connection.
Check for the manufacturers website for drivers.
You can check if you have drivers or not by going to Device Manager on Control Panel and looking for network adapters. Red X on the name indicates there is a problem. Fix it and you should be good to go.
If you can't see any devices. Find out the make and mode of your network card and try installing drivers. If it fails, get a new network card to replace a broken one.

My WiFi light is not lit up on my Inspiron 1520. I cannot detect any wireless networks.

In Dell Inspiron 1520 Notebook, there is a switch on the left hand side of the laptop to enable/ disable Wifi. Make sure that it is on and with wireless light activated - Press and hold Fn and press F2 (Fn+F2). This will enable the wi-fi and you will be able to detect and connect to a wi-fi network

Let me know if any further clarification/ assistance is required.

GoodLuck!
Dont forget to appreciate the solution if I could have been of any help!

Make sure it's turned on. Use the Fn plus that antenna looking function key. If still no response, replace the wifi card accessible at the bottom of the laptop.
