FUJINON 57A2 13768 BINOCULAR COMPASS PROBLEM

Gentlemen, I have a Fujinon 57A2 13768, 7X50MT-SX, 7 deg 30 min binoculars with the height/width indicator range lines and the unlit (Sisteco Ltd. Finland) compass which is visible in the lower left lens view. These binos are approx. 18 years old.

The oil in this compass has recently turned cloudy and light blue in color, and cannot be read. The compass sometimes sticks.

These binos are in excellent shape otherwise, and would not require any other service.
The Spec/Instructions/Care & Accessories booklet published in 1987, which came with the unit states that "Your Fujinon binoculars come with a lifetime limited warranty covering any defect in materials or workmanship".

Can you repair this unit under warranty?

If not, what is the cost to replace the compass?

What is the procedure to initiate repair? I am reluctant to just ship, without some idea of success.

SOURCE: Ranging reticle in Fujinon FMTRC-SX Binocular

Its easier to explain seeing a diagram. Go to Tascos website and download the instruction manual for the Offshore binoculars or Steiner Optic website and download the general binoculars instruction manual. It has all of Steiners models incuding those with a reticle. Most reticles are the same and there is no difference between meters and yards as your calculations are an approximate.

If your Fujinon is an ex military unit it has what is known as an M22 reticle. It is only slighlty different as it is graduated in mils but the calculations is the same. If it is the M22, google Binocular M22 manual. The military number for this is TM 9-1240-403-12 & P

Dust removal inside fujinon techno-stabi binocular

The case has to be opened for this, and a can of compressed air used. There is the risk that the binocs can be knocked out of collimation, so you'd best ask a repair tech for a quote.

Focusing problems

Hello Samaro,

This effect is produced when the tho sides of the binoculars are not focusing the same.
Since you sayit is present at long distance, it might be that one barrel is stuck and is not focusing the same as the otherone when you scroll the middle "focuser".

What you can do is open it up and try to clean it, also see if there is something, that is making one of the lenses not move forward as far as the other one.

Good luck,
Dahaka

Hi.

The binocular is behavior is the same as when the electronic control module is defective. First try resetting the electronics by pulling out and putting back the AA batteries. The power reset in some occasion may unlock a jammed control module. If you have an external power adapter also test the binocular using the power adapter.

If that does not help the control board must be replaced. Disassembling of optical units is quite delicate and require experience. In that case I suggest contacting Fuji to get support. You can also get a quote on repair from a third party service. Here the online form: Repair Form.

Here some contacts. You will find your local Fujinon contact on the user manual provided with the binocular:

7x50 Marine binoclars, Fujinon w/compass. How do you swing the compass to get it to read more acutely? The compass rose, while viewing through the lense, is slightly off kilter (not centered in the view)....

I've been thinking about this for awhile, and it seems to me you're experiencing a factory defect. I don't have one of these devices, or I'd know what "normal" was for compass, but if you can't easily have the display centered, something is out of kilter. Was it always like this, or did it just start occurring recenty? Your best venue would be to contact Fujinon support and see if they will replace or fix the problem. Here is their site:

Good luck, and hope this helps.

How to use the reticle in my Fujinon Mariner Binoculars?

How to use the reticle:
The vertical scale (reticle) visible through the left half of the binocular, above the compass display, allows you to calculate distance to an object if you know its height, or to calculate the height of an object if you know its distance from you.
Each mark on the vertical scale has a value of 5 MIL (1Mil is equivalent to an angel that can determined an object one meter in height at a distance of 1000 meters). Therefore, if a navigation chart gives the height of an object, by sighting on it and counting the number of MILS, you can determine how far away it is.
To Measuer distance when height is known:
Object Height(m)/Scale Reading x 1000m=Distance in Meters
To Measure height when distance is known:
Distance(m)xScale Reading/1000=Object height in meters
