By default, when you open it the dock for the cartridges is parked at the far right. And with the power off (which is how I tend to open up machines) it stays there so if it's a new machine you don't even know they're there.

Try powering the printer on, THEN open the main cover: the docks slide to the left. Then it's simple enough to put the cartridge tilted with the 'smile' lower and facing you, push it along the channel like the little diagram under the cover shows until it clicks into position.
Push it firmly in: if the LED reads E,1,5 either it's not properly in or possibly the little gold connectors at the front end of the cartridge (pushed furthest into the dock) are smeared/obscured so there's not a connection.

Mp140 printer- do I have to put both black and color cartridges? I have only black here and printer has an error.

Yes both ink cartridges need to be installed in the printer for it to work.

You will either need to purchase new Canon ink cartridges for your printer or refill your old ones.

Take care!

MP140 can't recognise the black cartridge that I've just installed. Error code 4 - any ideas? I've tried the manual - nothing, and not much luck online - Thanks

Error code 4 normally indicates that there is no unk, and the solution is by installing a genuine cartridge, Try to use Black PG40 remanufactured Canon printer ink cartridge. This cartridge is a high capacity cartridge which has been filled with 23ml of ink compared with the 16ml (Black) that you get with the originals. Compatible with: Canon Pixma MP140. if this error still occur it is better that you try the following procedure below:-

When you insert a refilled ink cartridge into your Pixma MP140 printer you should get a warning about the refilled cartridge. You should also be prompted, asking if you wish to disable ink level detecting. Agree to do so, and you won’t get the warnings again because the ink levels won’t be monitored by the printer.

Thanks

My canon mp140 shows E4

From CANON FAQs for your printer:

Issue: ERROR LED: E, 4
Solution: Press and hold Stop/Reset button for at least five seconds.
Clearing the Ink Error If you want to continue printing in this condition, press and hold the <Stop/Reset> button on the printer for at least five seconds, and then release it. Replace the ink cartridge and close the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover).
If printing is in progress and you want to continue printing, press the Stop/Reset button for at least 5 seconds with the ink cartridge installed. Then printing can continue under the ink out condition.
The function for detecting the remaining ink level will be disabled.
Replace the empty ink cartridge immediately after the printing. The resulting print quality is not satisfactory, if printing is continued under the ink out condition.

I placed a re-filled ink cartridges in my canon mp140 printer and

Computer chips in cartridges must be reset before the printer will recognize them as full. If you paid a shop to refill your cartridges take them back and complain. The best places will test the refilled cartridge before giving it to you.

Please note durability of prints using cheap ink is usually very poor, and as a result the manufacturers ink is usually much the better choice.
