Question about GE Advantium SCA2000B Microwave Oven

Splashes inside waveguide?

Hi,

Thanks for your answer about arcing in a GE Advantium. We noticed the waveguide was missing and replaced it, arcing continued so GE service replaced the magnetron under warranty. Still arcs, but seems to be improving over time. Is it possible that some splashes got inside the waveguide and that is why it continues to arc but less and less as the splashes get burnt up? GE service seems stumped.

The stirrer blade, the area where the stirrer motor comes into the ceiling, and the inner edges of the waveguide should be checked, clean, and if necessary, repainted with high temperature appliance paint.

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck to the inside of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

The waveguide cover is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

In some models it is the plastic ceiling.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced.

If you need more specific help, please reply back with your brand and full model number.

My LG/Dometic MICROWAVE sparks inside the cooking area when turned on

see the next steps and follow with common sense: God bless you
Microwave is arcing If you see arcing or sparking inside a microwave, turn unit off immediately. Arcing can be caused by having something metal in the oven cavity touching a side, an oven shelf is touching the side of the cavity, an oven shelf support has broken, microwave waveguide, or bad magnetron.
If your microwave has a shelf in it, and you do not use it, keep it out. If one of the shelf supports breaks or comes out, the microwave will arc where the support was. You will have to sand the spot down, paint with appliance paint and re-install support. If the shelf shifts on the support and touches the side it will arc.
Your magnetron waveguide will either come out of the top, or side of the oven cavity. Some will have a stirrer in it(mostly top waveguides) with a panel over, or just a cardboard type cover over it. Over time, the stirrer cover can become warped from the heat which will expose the stirrer's metal shaft which will then cause sparking. These covers and stirrers come in a kit and can be replaced from inside the oven cavity.
Your cover over a side waveguide is coated with a substance on it, and overtime this coating can come off from the heat and moisture in the microwave. These waveguide covers are very easy to replace from inside the oven cavity. Touch up any paint that may have chipped or come off because of the arcing.
If your waveguide cover and/or stirrer are all OK, then the spark is coming from your magnetron. The antenna on your magnetrom has overheated and burned, sending the microwaves out at the wrong angle. If you catch this microwave oven repair early enough, you can usually get by with just replacing the magnetron. If the arcing has caused servere damage inside the waveguide, you will need a new microwave. Waveguides are not replaceable and most you can barely see into them, let alone sand and re-paint. In this case of microwave oven repair, when you remove the magnetron, you will see the burned antenna, or your magnetron will fail the test bel

Sharp R-980A Convection oven - arcing without any metal (except turntable) and smoking inside.

There is a shorted happening when the magnetron release energy. The problem of that is the waveguide already not in focus (already have a big hole on it) hence it scattered the microwave wave elsewhere inside the unit and also to its own metal casing. That cause's to arcing when operating.
Waveguide hole needed to be replace and it need some cleaning & painting of the affected metal (usually near around the magnetron waveguide). Once it's done the unit will not arcing again.
I do hope I answer your problem. Thanks for asking.

The Magnetron has failed, causing the waveguide to become damaged. If the waveguide is damaged/burned the microwave can not be repaired and should be replaced.

Arcing while using micro wave

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck somewhere in the cavity of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

The waveguide cover (also called a spatter shield) is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

In some models it is a larger stirrer cover type made of thicker plastic in the ceiling of the oven.

It provides important protection for the magnetron.

Takes much longer now to heat things

I think you have two separate problems.

Taking a long time to heat is almost always a failing magnetron.

The cover on the side is the waveguide cover. If your waveguide cover is burned or broken, it will need to be replaced.

It protects the waveguide and magnetron from grewase and food particles, which can cause arcing and damage.

Hopefully your oven is just under the one-year mark and GE will fix it free under warranty.

Otherwise, they will replace the magnetron at no part cost, but labor will be your responsibility.

Crackling/sizzling sound

If you're hearing a crackling noise and don't see any sparks, you may have a magnetron that is arcing inside the waveguide. Once this arcing occurs, in some cases, replacing the magnetron may not be enough to fix the problem. There was also a noted problem with some models where the stirrer motor shaft inside the waveguide would arc when the magnetron was energized. This too, caused damage inside the waveguide. If the internal walls of the waveguide become damaged it cannot be repaired and the unit must be scrapped. The waveguide has a special coating to help propagate waves of RF energy. If the walls are damaged due to arcing this special coating gets burned off and will continue to arc even if a new magnetron is installed. This will eventually lead to magnetron failure and potentially cause a fire inside the oven. I would think seriously about looking into another unit if any of this may be occurring in your oven. Better to play it safe, especially with small children. I hope you find this advice helpful. PS A new magnetron can run as high as $250.
