It certainly isn't. And not everyone wants a PC anywhere near their living room.
About the closest you can come to a Tivo is one of the Philips DVD recorders with Gemstar GuidePlus and that isn't very close. They certainly don't offer anywhere near the functionality or completeness of the Tivo EPG.
I would be the first to admit that Tivo recording quality is showing its age. However, in every other respect the Tivo still wipes the floor with the competition. Having made some mods to my Tivo OS (and try doing that with a DVD recorder or a Sky+) I have acceptable resolution and extended recording time. I see no reason to swap from using my Tivo until something much better comes along, and there is no obvious sign of this happening.
There is nothing evangelical about this, it's just simple fact. As soon as decent replacement for the Tivo is available I will recommend it instead.

Exaggeration.
Exaggeration.
In your opinion.
And if someone had said to me in 1991 "what's the best option for a games machine, oh I'd like to play with midi and graphics" I'd have said Amiga then too. It could be done with a PC but given the costs involved it was by far the best choice at the time.
I had an Amiga: I also had a PC, an ST and an Archimedes, all for different reasons.
You're exaggerating (again) to prove a point which doesn't exist.
You're right: the free pvr projects are a solution, although I wouldn't recommend one unless someone asked specifically for a computer-based solution.
Exaggerating again?
For "gentle ribbing" read "deliberate provocation", perhaps.
Exaggeration.
I was taking your post in the context of the others you have made.
I don't have any ego in my PVR. You cut the lines (as "largely irrelevant") which made the point that I'd happily choose Sky+ if I could get it to network. Didn't that fit in with your argument?

Ditto.
TiVo isn't perfect but it's better than the alternatives. Sky+ is improving and will soon have (has already?) overtaken it (thanks to the better picture quality and the dual-record capability) but for now and given the OP's requirements, TiVo is a perfectly reasonable (in fact the only, given the requirement for UHF reception) recommendation.
Your anti-TiVo ranting is as bad as (if not worse than) the pro-TiVo envangelising.
(The reason I keep my TiVo is more to do with the network card and other hacks than either the failure of Sky+ or any anti-Murdoch feeling)

Tivo is the only device with an EPG that works on all platforms. This is a huge point in its favour. No matter where you live in the UK or what platform you receive on, your Tivo will still do its job. Try saying the same about any other recording device with an EPG.

No.
You need a Tivo.
