My laptop was stolen...is there a way i can recover it
With a new technology nowadays i possibly think i can track it if the thieves use it for internet. My friend told me that in every laptop it has its own unique serial number. Can you tell me more about this technology. Is there anyone or an agency from government or private group would help me with this problem. Your response is really appreciated. Thank you.

Sure ... well its not about the serial number ... if ur laptop has something called lowjack ...contact the mfg of the laptop and if u dont have that than in the details of the computer u will have the MAC address of the LAN card ... if u cant find that call the ACER guys and give them the serial number they will be able to locate the MAC address for you ... because they have all the details of the components in ur system and once u get that approach all the internet provider ... with the help of the local police and give them the MAC address if the person who has stolen ur laptop is using internet he will be caught

Did you have some type of tracking software such as Lojack or Prey? If so turn it on from any other PC and it will track the laptop's location (by GPS) once the person who stole it gets on the internet. It will also take pictures of them without them knowing it if it has a camera. Simply take the GPS Location report and the pictures to the Police and they will go pick up the laptop. As a computer repairman, I've installed and recovered many laptops and cellphones for people using this technique. http://www.generalsystemsconsulting.net
My my that is a terrible thing to happen, the only thing I can suggest is report it stolen give the serial and information to the police more than likely I hate to say this you may have to write this laptop off and purchase another one. Tracking them is difficult once they are out of your possession. Regardless if you had the MAC address even. If you report it stolen if the police find stolen items they can track a recovery by identifying its serial number. So doing a report would and possibly beat a blank and who knows you may be surprised one day when you get a call is this your laptop? I hope this happens for you but it will not if you do not report it and register it with the police as stolen. Sorry for your loss really.......John
You have to find the person that put the Hard Drive Password on. I'm not saying you stole the laptop, but 99% of the time if a person has a laptop and does not know the hard drive password, the laptop is stolen. The original Owner put the password on the hard drive to keep thieves from getting to sensitive data. It could have been set remotely by the original owner if the laptop i stolen.
You're out of luck. 99% of the time if there is a Hard Drive Password on the laptop and the person in possession of the laptop does not know the password, the laptop is stolen. The laptop is not usuable unless the person that put the Password lock on the hard drive takes it off. It was put there to keep thieves from getting to sensitive data. The original owner could have set the password remotely once the laptop was stolen. That drive can never be used, even if you took it out of the laptop.
A mac address is like an internal serial number, but I doubt you documented the mac address. IF you did, a skilled security professional/hacker could probably figure out how to see it based on the email addresses in use on the laptop, theif's email address + the address where you think the machine is being used and the service provider. It would take a lot cooperation to pull all this together, but you might be able to get the police to consider looking into it if you can provide this information as "proof" of the location of the laptop. Just a thought....
Stolen laptop can only be recovered if you have MAC address of laptop. IP adress are temporary and can be changed or altered,
its not worthy to find IP instead try to get MAC adress.
If you have registerd your laptop with its Manufacturing Site like Lg, DELL etc then you can contact them and probably by providing them serial no. you can get MAC address. Every machine ha different MAC address and I am sure with your serial no. you can get this information from your dealer or manufacturer.
I do not really think this sort of technology is really with us right now. For future reference , there is software you can install when it is in your possesion in order to log in to the computer if it is stolen such as preyproject.com
There is no way on earth to track your laptop unless you had installed some software that would tell were is it once it's on-line such as "ADEONA" which by the way it's open source. I'm sorry to say but next time you buy one you could protect yourself by installing this kind of solutions. Remember that the worst enemy for a computer is it's user.
