Pc had been unused for a year or so but not used much before that. decided to start using it so powered up, it did some updates then shut itself off. I managed to power it up again but after 5 mins it shut off again. Now it will not power up at all.

You will need to replace the hard drive which has any version of windows operating system, or you will have to re-install windows xp on that computer. Assuming if the computer has a green light and monitor has an orange light. I've encountered this problem where I work at.

I also have a Dell 8400 heat problem . I know the problem ! I own a $1000.00 plus Raytek laser temp gun . I had some problems and started to read about all of the Dell 8400/4400 over heating problems . I out my new heat gun and started to test the temps. on the inside of my Dell 8400 ! Socket 775,Mobo Dell 0J3492,800 Bus,Bios A09.
The non-fan Radeon x300 card was 105-115.3 F after one hour !
The heat sinks over the chipset was the big problem . 107.8-124.6f after just one hour! The P4 cpu was 93-104f .
I am very lucky to have the laser temp gun I have .
The fix . I have all kinds of old fans and hard drive coolers from computers I have trashed over the years . I got new 40mm/10mm fans on the way from the bay . I had to use some old worn out fans 40mm fans to hold me over .I ordered a new video card also . THEY WORKED ! My temps dropped down to 82-85f on the chip set and video card after running the fans
I hope this helps .

Download and install CCleaner.
You can use ccleaner to clean up all windows and internet temporary files, ren a registry clean and also in "tools > startup" stop that annoying Sinic nag screen from coming up.

its definately not the motherboard, actually when a ps is about to spoil it starts giving that problem and also, the memory cards are also able to cause this problem too. but first, plz try changing ur ps and see if it works..
