I have the Canon MV890 and have previously captured footage into Sony Vegas Movie Studio 6.0 but since lending the camera to a friend I can no longer capture the footage from the mini DV tape onto my computer. I have Windows XP 2002. I have tried using a different firewire and different software for editing but the camera is still not being detected.

You'll need a software able to capture and edit video. Your footage is on tape, right? First, you must have a firewire port on your pc, with the cam properly connected to. Then, all you have to do is make use of a program like Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas, or even the Windows Movie Makes, and find the capture window/mode/whatever, which will show you a console with play-pause-stop-rew-ff-rec buttons and a little monitor, to see where on the tape you are. Once on the capture console, you'll rewind the tape to the beginning of your footage and press rec ON THE CONSOLE, not on the camera. The software should ask you for a place to save the file and that's all.
i was having this problem and found on another site how to resolve it.
open vegas 9 and go to help and then select SONT ON THE WEB and select LATEST UPDATES and download the 9.0b update
that should hopefully resolve your problem.
It probably isn't anything your friend did. There is a conflict somewhere between your driver for your camera, your software and possibly an update somewhere along the way.
Try these two things to see if the computer is detecting the device and let me know what the results.
1. With your camera turned off plug it into the camera.
2. Make sure that your USB port is a 2.0 if not you may need to by an adapter to give it a little extra "boost"
3. Make sure that the camera is not in capture mode that it is in transfer mode.
4.Now go to "My Computer" pay attention to what is there then turn the camera on.
Has the camera shown up?
(be sure to turn the camera off, right click, safely remove, then unplug)
If that does not work try this -
1.Go to Start- Accessories- Device Manager
Im not sure how it will show up here it just depend on where it was installed originally. So we are going to expand 2 diffrent places.
+Disk Drives, click the plus to expand it
3. Plug in the camera wait a second to let the computer recgonize the device then turn it on.
