Motor runs but door does not open

I have a 1/2hp Sears Craftsman garage door opener for a single door garage. When I went to open the garage the motor ran but the door did not open. So now when I press the button all I hear is the motor running but the chain does not move and the door does not open. Thanks

last cold snap my wife was opening the garage door and it quit half way. The motor runs through a cycle but the sprocket does not turn which turns the chain. I have looked inside but see nothing wrong other than the plastic or nylon gears may be worn out as their are strippings laying inside. At first the chain moved part ways and would quit. Any ideas? It sounds nearly the same as the person I read I am responding to.

Same problem. Motor runs, chain does not move. Unit is 8 years old and can't find the owners manual. Where can we see the gear and sprocket kit? What is the cost? Is there an on line manual with instructions or even part numbers?

I have a Sears Craftsman 1/2 hp garage door opener with a date of 2/00 and have the same problem as the others listed here. I am not so much a handyman as much as an anti-handyman:) Where would I get a gear and sprocket kit? And where can I get a basic outline on how to replace it? Thanks in advance.

Is this a conspiracy, I have the same exact problem with a unit built in early 2000 and yes when I removed the cover I could see that the plastic gear was all but worn out. Can someone with limited mechanical skills fix this or should I give up now and flip the bill for a new one ?

I had the same problem. Sear sells a small gear kit with just the plastic gear ($27) or a full gear and bearing kit ($37). I bought the full kit because it has the plastic gear already on the down shaft and made it easy. It took me about 10 minutes to change it but about 30 minutes to get the up/down adjustment back. KEY: close the garage and hook up the chain in the dwon position so you have room to adjust the tention!

Check to make sure you don't have a broken door spring and also remove the cover from the motor unit and check the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor and may be stripped.

Motor hums but door doesn't move. If I disconnect door and give chain a horizontal poke, it will move. When I reconnect door it returns to humming, without movement.
