I can't download anything, and the BIOS dignostic said the hard drive is missing. I have no recovery disk either.
Hello I was plagued by this same message for weeks and it would randomly come and go. I asked many people for help all said things like failed hard drive, failed motherboard, to windows 8 update malfunction, corrupt registry and so on. Then one day it hit me, In a fit of frustration I took apart my entire computer and carefully inspected for any damage at all and the one place I found a little bit of wear and tear was on a $2 red wire that connected the sata 1 port on the motherboard to the sata port on the hard drive. It made perfect sense the reason the computer randomly cant see your Operating System is this wire is wearing down and can come lose for many reasons. So this potentially hundred dollar problem was fixed by a $2 wire.

Hard drive is failing. Reseat hard drive cables. If it does not work, have to replace hard drive. probably damage from overheating or powersurges.
SOURCE: A disk read error occurred press ctl+alt+delete to restart
May I know whether the Hard Drive is listed in the BIOS? Try reinstalling the Windows using the Windows OS disc.

your HDD may be corrupted, re-installing windows vista is one option. Your best bet is if you have/ can obtain a copy of windows vista run setup and try the repair wizard in the windows vista setup, the wizard automatically finds errors and missing files and replaces them therefore solving any errors in your HDD. you can also try to use the recovery wizard from your recovery disc. best of luck
