Question about General (102105011) Electric Kettle
I have an old electric kettle from General Electric from the (70's?) By accident, the electric prong fell in a tub of vegetable oil. I wiped it down, but I'm afraid if I plug it in, something will happen. Is it safe to plug back in?
In the early seventies there were all kinds of warnings in the media (CBC radio, Toronto Star, etc) advising EVERYONE to get rid of their electric kettles (even ones bought recently) because they had all been welded and sealed with lead based solder. Every time you heated water you were dosing yourself and your family with a nasty amount of lead... and as you should know, lead poisoning is cumulative. Yes these kettles last forever... and will keep poisoning you forever. Go and buy a new kettle of glass or stainless with no exposed element.
Also, NEVER drink or cook with water from your hot water heater; it contains high doses of metals which naturally accumulate in any hot water tank.
I'm a Water Quality Association Certified Water Specialist, but you could ask your local Health Unit if you want confirmation.
