    Hi,

Thanks for you great response. The Old HDD is accessacle..but not through the machine... What I will try to do is use a USB ? IDE adaptor.

Copy all of the information from the old HDD to the new one...

Question... will the new HDD require formating and partitioning before... in other words preparing the HDD to take the files from the old HDD.

To flash the BIOS I suspect I still need the CD Drive...as there is no Floopy A:/... or is there another way?

Again mant thanks for your help on this....

Try your old HDD in it and see if that works. If it does work then nothing is damaged except your DVD drive/Controller. Try putting the new HDD in another computer, installing windows then putting it back in the HP. If all else fails then flash the bios with an updated image and see if that rectifies the problem.

To answer your question, yes the HDD will require preparation beforehand, you may just want to create a disk image and burn it to the new HDD (will save lots of headaches since some windows files are protected and cannot be moved or copied).

And to flash the bios you can use use pretty much any removable media, flash stick's etc...

Oh and one thing i forgot to ask is if you have tried resetting the CMOS? (If you have no clue what I'm on about read the motherboard manual and it will tell you how to do everything)

You can remove or change the Windows User oradministrator's password. You need access to a computer with Internet access todownload the Hiren's Boot CD and burn it onto a CD. Then insert this CD into the laptop/computer and boot upthe laptop/computer with the Hiren's CD and follow the instructions. There are very useful utilities CD and it a Linux boot CDwhich contains quite a lot of Utility programs including a password removalprogram. Sir, you will need to make use of a recovery disc or a retail version of an operating system disc in order to reload windows. i dont think you'll be able to download a licensed of windows copy over the net. what you can download are the free OS like Ubuntu.

Where do i find a boot up disk for my hp pavilion running xp? currently the unit starts to boot and then restarts.

Trying to get a bootable XP CD is difficult if not impossible to purchase. Therefore you might want to create one.

I just recently created a bootable XP CD since I was building a new computer and wanted to be able to boot from a CD.

The following URL is a blog I found that helped me create my bootable CD

Create Bootable XP CD

You'll need an XP CD in order to copy the files to your hard disk and to extract the boot image from.

I already had an XP SP3 disk and didn't need to perform the "merging" like the link above does. I did find and download iso buster (freeware) in order to extract the microsoft boot image file.

I used the Roxio steps to create my CD. My version of Roxio was slightly different so the instructions were not 100% correct but I was able to figure things out.

If you successfully create your bootable XP CD you will still need your license key to install just as if it came right from the factory

Yes there is. You need to aquire a windows xp install disc, and boot from it and then install it.
To boot from it you need to go into the boot menu on startup, press F2 when next boot up and hold it until boot options appear. (may be F8 or even F12 depending on settings).

XP INSTALLATION

All you have to do is to access the BIOS then set the option of first boot device as CD then the second boot device as HDD or hard disk. When you turn on your HP you should see the option to go to the BIOS Setup sometimes its F2 or F12 or Del Depending on the type of motherboard you have on your laptop. Once you set it to boot from CD , when you startup your computer you should see press any key to boot from CD just press any key and it will boot. After the installation change back the first boot device.

If you have any other questions do message me back.
