Question about Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

It won't turn on

I have had my Canon Powershot Camera less than one year and when I turn it on it the lens will come out but the screen is black. I tried recharging the battery twice and a new chip but to no avail. What do I do. I really like the camera and i want to be able to use it.

I have the same problem, have tried pressing the DISP button and the screen still remains black. My camera is not even 2 months old.

Did you accidentally press the DISP button on the back? This button manually turns the display on and off in order to save battery power (thus you could use your optical viewfinder to take many more pics than you normally would be able to). To turn it back on, turn on the camera and try pressing the DISP button.

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here are some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

Canon S5 died.

If it was less than a year old, I hope you sent it to Canon for repair.

If not, then you have to have your camera professional serviced to repair it.

It may be an internal switch, the DC/DC converter board, or a defect in the main board.

Best regards,

Canon Powershot SI screen goes black after taking a photo

That sounds like a sticky lens shutter. They usually have to be replaced, as they usually will need parts. When the camera is working look inside the lens and take a picture(with flash turned off). You should see a black shutter door clicking shut in the lens. When the camera acts up, look inside the lens again. If the door is staying shut full time, that is your problem.

E18

E18 is the canon fault number for lens error. Is the lens stuck out? does it click when the camera is switched on? Try lightly tapping the lens on a hard surface. This sometimes resets the lens. If all this fails take it to bits! (but watch the flash module as this can give a nasty shock.Big black capacitor) You will see the lens module take the it to bits carefully and re seat the components. I have done a few over the years. It takes about an hour. If you have any more issues contact me.

The following blog outlines some repair options for a lens error. They won't work for all cases, but they're worth a try if the camera's no longer under warranty:

Lens problems

Try opening your camera, check the lens gear if its teeth are complete. If so, check if something stucks on it. Its much better to bring your camera to an authorized service center to re timing your lens track... ^_^

E18

E18 indicates a lens or "optical unit" problem. In other words your zoom lens won't function correctly. Canon will be more than willing to look after you.
