    Great minds think alike!!!!

But didnt work...... tried installing new now, have a feeling its going to lock up at one of the DLLs again. Was told that if freezing up like that could be a sign that my BIOS needs to be flashed.

OK call me a blond but when I heard that a picture came to mind of me standing infront of the laptop with nothing but a trench coat on... OK locked up on Now when I try to boot with out a disk it comes up with

    NTLDR is missing

    Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

OK now its offical Im ready to bang my head against the wall

If you get the Windows splash screen (which you indicate you do), then the system is working. Unfortunately, when Windows starts, it is trying to use the video card drivers. It appears that the drivers may be corrupt. The initial way to check this is to hit F8 as it is starting to see if you can start windows in safe mode. If you can, go into the device manager and remove the display adapter you see there. When Windows starts, it should find it and either ask you for the drivers or start with generic drivers that work until you provide the correct ones.

This is pointing to a corrupt registry. In other words, the Windows installation has failed. If your recovery disk allows, I would boot from it and it should act like it's going to install Windows. (This all depends on how the company set up your recovery disk). The next prompt should ask you if you wish to continue installing Windows or repair it. You could try to do a repair by entering the command chkdsk/R. There is a possibility that this will fix your problem. If this doesn't work, then boot from the CD again and proceed like you did before, only hit enter to tell it to install Windows. You will then get a screen that will ask you to press F8 to accept the terms. At the following prompt, choose to repair Windows instead of installing a new copy. See if that helps.

I'm thinking you have XP Home. Try this: If you can get hold of an XP Home CD, use that instead of your manufacturer's disk. It will work, but you'll have to use the Windows code that is on the side (or bottom in the case of a laptop) to authenticate it.
I suspect at this point that the recovery disk they provided you is bad. Bad disk--bad! bad! bad!
    I don't think it's the BIOS.

OK--you might now be looking at a hardware problem. Like a hard drive or possibly memory.

I need to re-install Windows XP Home Edition

Contact Averatec and order recovery media, if they are still available.
If you cannot get a Windows XP OS to install, you can always try Linux. The Ubuntu distribution, and most other ones are free.

Problem booting into xp home edition on laptop!

Hi Andrew,

Before you install XP check the memory, harddrive, cddrive is getting detected in CMOS or not. What about the data in your harddrive?
connect the harddrive to another PC and copy the Data from the drive. If not you will lose all the data on the harddisk if you install the XP on the same disk.

If you had mentioned the system configuration, i would have told whether you can install XP or Not. Since its a laptop and just 5 years old i guess you can install XP on that.

I have a Averatec 3280 is there a website that I can get a XP recovery disk downloaded for free?

No unfortunately. You will have to purchase an XP retail CD or call Averatec for a replacement disk. It is illegal to post Windows install disks for free download. Sorry.
Maybe there is someone you know that has the same version on XP you do and you could reinstall from their disks and use your license # for activation. Unfortunately the drivers for your machine will not be on their CD and you will have to go to the Averatec support site to get the appropriate drivers for your model computer.

Best wishes

File crupted repair

Insert your Windows XP install Disk and reboot
when it asks if you want to repair or install windows pick INSTALL. it will then search for previous installations and find yours.

At this point you press R for repair, it will reair your entire installation of windows, leaving your prgrams and files intact.

Be careful though, as the wrong choice could wipe your drive, although you are given many dire warnings by the installer before you do this, so if you read and pay attention you should be safe.
