If you are talking about your Operating System (XP or Vista) showing that it is counterfeit, the negative effect would be the delay when logging into Windows and you will not be able to get any Windows updates. Do you believe your software was a legitimate purchase?

You are using pirated operating system or your windows is not registered, if the second is the case then you can register your operating system or you have to reinstall your operating system.

Plz let me know how to resolve this.. it is showing "you may be a victim of software counterfeiting" and also a msg saying " this copy of windows did not pass genuine windows validation"

Then it is a copy.
You can get a little program to remove the WGA warning, and also to make that copy appear genuine
Check here for the files you need, you will need a torrent client like Utorrent to download them http://isohunt.com/torrents/?ihq=xp+wga+removal

I am A victim of software counterfeiting. how ca i resolve this?

Well if you knowingly installed a copy from a friend or so then it could possible be a counterfeit copy...
However if you know that it is a genuine copy and you got the error message recently then contact microsoft, i have had this occur on people who actually bought there computer from a store, using "windows 7" but its the same technology used to detect the validation of your Windows so the system dont really matter, it would normally pop up after the update and then inform of a software fraud and a counterfeit copy may be installed and they had to call microsoft for resolution, they knew about it, but i never heard of it affecting XP.
Give microsoft a call if you know it is a genuine copy and they can resolve the issue for you...

RESOLVE SOFTWARE COUNTERFEITING

Contact Microsoft. They will often provide discounted licences to people that demonstrate that they have paid for counterfeit software. If you can show them a receipt indicating that you paid money in good faith, they will licence your illegal copy for their lowest current fee. I think it is around $90 now, for a programme that usually costs $240. Good deal to get all the benefits of a legal copy.

OK, This is a notice from Microsoft. The validation tool thinks your Version is a counterfeit. It is not a virus, but is still a headache no less. It will not go away, we can't shut it off. The only way to fix is to reload with a valid code or call Microsoft to report it. I hope this helps :)

This means the Windows Validation Tool has checked your installed copy of Windows and has found it to be a non-genuine copy. This means the product key is non valid.

Where did you get the PC? If a "friend" installed Windows for you then he is using illegal product keys.

If you are sure your Windows is genuine, you need to telephone Microsoft and fight it out with them.
