It is a leaf switch that senses that the door is closed. A C-clamp in the upper left hand corner clamping the door closed will make it work. If you remove the clamp, it will randomly open again. The correct fix is to open up the unit and bend the leaf switch to make it activate earlier and fully close when the door is closed.

I had a mini system with the same problem, out of guarantee so was either fix it myself or bin it.
I opened the unit and removed the whole cd drawer assembly from it's housing. I then, not really recommended, plugged it back in and by pressing the open/close a few times the drawer finally opened. Put it all back together and it now works fine. I think what had happened is that I use the cd player once every couple of months and combined with the lack of use is the fact that there are several smokers in the living room and basically it got jammed by a build up of nictotine or whatever.
