I cant get rid of web searches and make google my only search engine

you need to go to IE 'Tools' tab;
click on Internet Options at bottom;
go to the 'Programs' tab, click;
next, click on 'Manage Add-Ons';
on left where it says "Search Providers", click;
if google is not there then look at bottom left of window where it says
'Find more search providers', click'
when it opens find Google and click/dbl to select it or Add and it will be added to search providers;
back out to where Manage Add-ons and if it does not appear you may have to close and restart; if it is there select google and at bottom right, make it the Default search provider;
after it is default, you can remove the others by selecting and then clicking 'Remove' just as you did for making default.
should do it.

Can't open open google, and yahoo opens but will

Hi, Check the settings and that you are not being blocked by any antivirus/malware installed on your system. Check for viruses/worms. You can then download alternative browsers as options like google chrome, apple safari (for macs), netscape navigator, mozilla firefox.

Search window opens when not doing a search

That is a sure sign of an infection.
First of all perform all the Windows updates.
Second, run your AV program, an antispyware, and hijacker programs.

Its going to be lenghty and tedious job, but necessary if you want to keep your information.

Another solution could be make a backup of all your data, and format and reinstall your OS.

When i open IE 8 a message comes up that says "A program on my computer has corrupted my default search provider for IE" I can close the message and then another box opens to set my default search...

Set the default search provider to Google when you see the message. I then suggest you update all security programs and then run all your security scans in Safe Mode. You are more than likely infected with something.
