Question about Brother MFC 7420 All-In-One Laser Printer

Error messages but I can't find the errors

I keep getting the error about taking the drum out - sliding the blue tab from side to side and then put drum back. I have done this several times
I have put in a new toner cartridge.
also when I tried to copy a sheet it kept telling me I had a paper jam and I have checked several times - no jam
I just got the printer and installed it on my HP xp

    "Drum Error - Take drum out slide the blue tab from side to side several times, return the tab to (^), put drum back." This is what I got the error message from Brother DCP-7010

Ona brand new machine you get a starter cartridge, you will need to put in a new cartridge

It says drum error but the cart and drum is replaced with new and still can't get past the drum error message.


Hi There!
What you can do to clear the Drum Error message is to clean the corona wire.
  • Open front cover of the machine and remove the drum & toner cartridge assembly.
  • Remove the toner from the drum and gently shake the toner cartridge from side to side put it on a piece of paper to avoid scattering the toner.
  • Theres a blue tab on the upper left side of the drum, slide it from left to right, right to left about 5-6 times don't forget to put the blue tab back to it's home position(where the arrow is).
  • Put the toner back into the drum make sure it will click into place.
  • Reinstall the drum and toner assembly back into the machine and close the front cover.
  • LCD should display the date & time.

If you continue to receive the message try resetting the drum counter by doing the following:
  • Open the front cover
  • Press the Options key on the control panel. The display will show "REPLACE DRUM - 1.YES 2.NO".
  • Press 1 to reset the drum count.
  • Close the front cover

Unit has about 20k copies. Just replaced toner and drum. Keep getting "drum error", and tells me to take out drum and slide blue tab back and forth, which I do. Then when I put the drum back...


Install the drum unit and toner cartridge
assembly in the machine.
Press Options.
To confirm you are installing a new
drum, press 1.
When the LCD shows Accepted, close
the front cover.

If this doesnt correct it after installing the new drum return it to the store you got it from and get a new one could be defective

The printer says drum error,slide the blue tab from side to side,when I have done this the printer works but the repeats the error sign again.


Same problem-
1st- take out drum & toner assembley- with open door - press OPTIONS - then #1 - reinsert
if continues
2nd - I sprayed canned air on the drum wire assemble (where our favorite 'blue' tab slides) the toner builds up; then I gentle wiped the drum in a horizontal direction while manually turning the drum several times.
I reinstalled and like new...

Getting a Drum Error & asks to slide blue tab side to side several times. Have done this so so many times still getting error.


if replacing the drum does not cure the problem, (dont forget the reset procedure, press options with the front door open), the main circuit board will need replacing and dont keep the drum as it could blow the new board as well !!!

My printer is giving me a message as follows drum error- take out drum and slide blue tab from side to side a few time. where is the drum?


When you open the door in front pull out the drum/toner assy. You will see a blue piece on top left side. It will slide right and left. Do it 5 times. Leave it all the way to the left and reinstall it. steven 818-888-0006

I'm getting drum error message, it says move blue tab back and forth, I don't what the drum is and I don't see blue tabs


Open your document feeder cover (it pivots away from you), then open the forward top cover (it pivots towards you). Inside the machine is the drum / toner unit, remove it. On top of this assembly is the blue tab (plastic handle) either on the left or right side. Slide that tab back and forth ~ 4 or 5 times. Reinstall the drum / toner unit. Close the top cover, then the document feeder cover. Done...

Having replaced cartridge now says drum error, remove drum and slide blue tab. How do you remove drum>


The drum is the piece that holds the toner cartridge. Once you remove it you'll see a pale blue tab at the rear of the drum unit. Slide it side to side a couple of times to clean debris from the drum area.

Open the front cover and take out the toner/drum unit. On the top of the drum unit you will see a blut tab that you can slide side to side. Do this 10+ times and this should fix your issue. Make sure to put the blue tab back in the original start position which is believe is to the left on that model.

Toner/drum problems


This seems to happen some of the time. Brother has an FAQ for this:

1. Verify the toner cartridge is installed correctly by following the
steps listed below:

a. Open the front cover.

b. Lift the drum unit slightly and pull it out. Place the drum unit on
adrop cloth or large piece of disposable paper to avoid spilling and
scattering the toner.

c. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum by holding down the lock
lever (blue tab) on the left side of the drum unit and lift the toner
out.
*Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands
or clothes, immediately wash it off with cold water.

d. Gently rock the toner cartridge from side to side five or six times
to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

e. Place the toner cartridge into the drum (be sure it clicks into
place).

f. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding
the blue tab on the top of the cartridge from right to left several
times. Return the blue tab to the home position before reinstalling the
drum unit assembly.

g. Reseat the drum unit into the machine.

h. Close the front cover.

2. If the message "Toner Life End" continues to appear on the display,
contact Brother Customer Service at 1-877-Brother (276-8437) Monday
through Friday, 9:00am - 7:00pm EST, excluding holidays.
