Problem upgrading maps

When I plug my tom tom into my computer to downloaded/update maps; I get the screen that asks if I want to connect to the computer, I answer yes. Then the screen comes up saying please wait.............and I do but nothing ever happens after that.
What do I do?
And is it free to update it's maps?

If you are using a Windows 98 or 2000 PC there is limited support for USB devices and you often need to install a driver before the USB device can be connected.

If you are using XP and you can't see the Tom Tom device as another drive then you may have a faulty lead. The lead you need is a USB 'A' to 'Mini B' which can be found at Maplin:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=97267

Depending upon the country you are in you could get a similar product from a local electronics store but it will be called the same.

Also check that you computer can see other types of memory sticks. If it can't it may be a software problem or a computer USB port problem. Try another USB port if you have one.

How to activate the map once we have the code?

You can activate products by connecting the unit to a USB port of a computer. If The Tomtom Home application is installed on computer it will launch and update the unit. On page 1 of main Home menus there is an icon for activation.

To make things easy for you I am enclosing a screen capture from the HOME 2.7 application.

My tomtom is 24% up to date. How do I update?

You need a Tom Tom USB Cradle that will allow you to connect your tom tom to a computer. Assuming you already have one, then just connect the Cradle to a working USB port on the computer, then with the computer turned on, plug your GPS into the cradle. It should come on automatically and ask you "Connect to Computer?" Just press Yes on the GPS screen and your GPS will attempt to talk with your computer. It will automatically download updates for your system software and any mapping corrections made by you of other users. If it does not automatically download updates, then you need to launch Tom Tom Home. Once this launches one of the first screens has a button titled "Update My GPS" Just touch this bitton, or click it with your mouse... and you will be away.

Up date maps

To update maps you should run Tom Tom home on your computer and then connect the GPS

It will then ask you if you want to connect to the computer and you would tell your GPS yes.

Tom Tom home will once it finds your GPS then proceed to do any minor updates.

If your map is out of date it will offer you the option of purchasing a newer version.

don't be tempted to look for free / pirate maps !
These can cause problems in starting up your GPS (believe me)

Tom Tom map prices are not too bad and compared to many GPS are quite easy to install using Tom Tom home.

If you don't have Tom Tom home the latest version can be found here.

Looping after free map download

What free maps are you talking about? All updated maps I could find for mine cost money.

If these maps are provided by other users, is there a chance that they could be corrupted, making the Tomtom unable to read it?

I am in Australia, have used tomtom xl first time last week. I am going to USA in 7 days does it have usa maps in it, if not where do I download them from.

Install the software that came with the TOM TOM then connect it with the USB cable that came with it. It will automatically take you to http://www.tomtom.com/, then you can buy and download maps directly to your Tom Tom.

I would recommend you only do a map upgrade if you definatly need to as looking at other posts on this forum lots of people have problems after trying to update maps.
Updating maps is NOT FREE , you have to pay for updates and after downloading updates you need to reactivate the map with your product code . Only do an update after backing up your existing maps other sie you might have trouble reverting back if the download goes wrong.

Psg map update

Pioneer SUCKS!! After buying a GPS and being told upfront by Pioneer that a upgrade will be aval. in 90 days for a modest cost, it takes them almost 9 months to come up with it. Then they have the nerve to ask $150 for the upgrade after people have paid $300 to $500 for their GPS. I will never buy a Pioneer product again. I switched to a TOM TOM and it works better, no upgrade problems and over all it cost me less than that POS Pioneer.

No maps found on tom tom one new edition

this problem just happened to me. i'd just bought my new tomtom one and tested it on the journey home. all was well and i was really impressed. that was until I got it home and went to update it to get the latest maps for my area. I installed all the software as instructed by the on screen prompts and downloaded the latest updates. i then went to turn the device on, and was greeted by a message stating ''no maps found!''

after almost two hours of complete frustration, i then tried probably the easiest solution anyone could think of:

First of all, connect the device to your computer and close down tom tom home. (making sure it isn't even open in the system tray).

Now, open my computer and find the device. it will be labelled as a storage device (mine was drive G). Open it up and find where the maps are saved to. Something like, UK and Ireland, or something similar relating the place you live. Once located, delete them manually.

Now, reopen tomtom home and go to tools. Click ''use latest map guarantee''. It will then download the maps again and install them onto the device.

Next disconnect using the option 'disconnect device'' from the device menu.

Finally turn on your tom tom if it doesn't automatically, and you should be back in business. This worked for me, after trying numerous way more complicated solutions I found in various forums.

Hope it works for you too!
xx
