Question about Brother Lay-In Thread Serger Mechanical Sewing Machine

Brother 3034D lock serger locked up

I was serging when my serger suddenly locked up. It made a clunking noise when starting up from the first day I got it. I think something was loose parts on the lower looper and just fell out too far to clunk back in. I'm acquainted a little with it's mechanics since I changed a lower looper on a serger before. I fear having to deal with getting things back into timing, but will do what necessary to get it running again.

looking at the service manual is not the answer. It contains nothing about a machine locking up.

Brother 3034d overlocker, handwheel is very stiff. I have oiled it and nothing happened. How do I fix it please?

If it is a mechanical machine, you can perform more oiling than recommended in the manual. I remove the base of my Bernina overlocker and oil the other moving joints. Even applying heat from a hairdryer may help. Below is the process I use for sewing machines, but it would work on a serger too:

I am trying to teach myself to sew.... what is a serge stitch an how do I set my brother sewing machine to do it?

A serger (overlocker) is not a sewing machine. If you look at the inside seams of a purchased t-shirt, you will usually find a serge stitch that was created using a serger (overlocker). A serger/overlocker usually uses 3 or 4 threads to create that stitch. It also trims the fabric at the same time it finishes the fabric edge. The serge stitch is a chain stitch that, if you pull a particular thread, the entire stitch will come undone.

Your sewing machine is not able to create that same stitch. Your sewing machine may have what is called an "overlock" stitch, but it will use only 2 threads (the top and bobbin) to create that stitch. You would have to consult your owner's manual to see if it can make an overlock stitch.

Where can I get a book to show me what it does?

SERGER:
A serger can do a lot of things. Frequently, they are used to finish raw seams and hems, but there's so much more they can do. It's mostly just a matter of experimenting and deciding how to apply it to your projects. I've even serged a strip quilt.

You can download workbooks and work through them. (This is a Bernina work book site, but sergers frequently can do similar stitches.)

Does anyone have a suggestion? I have threaded the machine correctly but I cannot get the machine to sew.

You have a nice serger, so let's start with some basics:
Is your serger cleaned?
Go back to the instruction book and set the entire machine to the factory settings. For example, set all the dials to tension 4. Use quality thread which is made for your spool holder. Usually cones of thread work best. Use an appropriate fabric, not sheer, not very heavy drapery fabric. Make absolutely sure it's threaded properly. Finally, make sure all the threads are under the presser foot.....then start serging. If the serger still won't serge without tangling, it might be good to have it serviced. I find that buying a new serger is more useful than having a worn out one serviced. Good luck!

Brother 1034d serger. Seems unusually noisy (mechanically) in needle/cutter area. Not motor or belt as noise is metal parts clacking even after new needles, cleaning, oiling. Is this sound normal for...

in response to all serger, no, after my babylock serger is cleaned and serviced it runs quietly.
as for the brother, it's possible thats normal, try contacting a repair shop in your area and tell them about the serger and see what they say.
it's possible that the serger may need some type of adjustment
or a part may have broken .
